Sounds like the analog board is going. This happened to most early iMacs, and a few later models. Soon your screen will just die. The solution tho, unhook the internal moniter and hook up a external from the internal port. My 13" iMac is now a 17"! Ok OK, a little Frankenstein like, but the bigger moniter is much nicer anyway.

There was a problem with monitors on iMacs running OS X if you didn't apply the firmware updates first.

Here is Apple's Support Doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75430

Of course if you are not on OS X, that isn't your problem.

I've also seen monitors go wonky, both permanently and temporarily, from being to close to fans, to close to power lines that may be right behind a wall, largish speakers, and phones of all sorts. Basically anything that creates a strong enough magnetic field.

I think the internal monitor connection changed with the slot-loaders, so your trick won't work anymore.
