Hi,

A lot of stuff has been said about pure OSX apps but I have found nothing about Classic/OS9 emulation performances.

I give you my use case: I am using a OS9 only application. This app wont be updated before a long time by its developer (probably he wont migrate it to OSX at all). This app (named Cassio) is an Othello program with a game database management used by a lot of top world Othello players for tournament training.

I have been using this app on OSX10.1 & 10.2 for a long time with very good performances; moreover this app can give you a "performance estimation/score" of the running platform.

For example on my TiB 1Ghz with 1GbRAM, I get around a 7500 score for OSX10.2.8.
Please note that this score is pretty stable between different runs.

I was planning to buy a G5 1.8 but decided first to do a small bench and the results were really disappointing. Without any more informations, I have to stop buying it. :-((

My bench: I have been to my local dealing in Paris (France) and tested this app onto a G5 1.8 with 512Mb RAM and fresh OSX10.2.8. I was hoping to get a 10,000 on this machine but to my surprise the real score was between 4500 & 7000 with a lot of instabilities between runs!!

I have also noticed that menubar refresh is really bad. As a reminder, this point was true also on first 10.2 builds but no more visible on 10.2.6+.

My questions are:

- are you aware of any Classic performance problems ?

- in the case you have a lovely G5 2*2Ghz, could you install this little app and report here the result of this bench?

For doing this bench,

1) download Cassio at http://cassio.free.fr/cassio/custom_...26_PPC_fr.sit, decompress it, and run it. It should complain about a missing file, just click on the dialog box.

2) Then activate "PI" menu with ALT+P; a small "PI" menu should appear between "Base" & "Help" menu bar items.

3) Then activate report with Apple+R shortcut then the report window should appears.

4) launch the bench several times by using PI menu and "Etalonner la vitesse du mac".

5) report the score number named "indiceVitesseMac".

Thank you for your contribution,

Sorry, don't have much to add, just a few questions.

There are Othello tournaments and a worldwide ranking system!?!?!

And why do you need crazy amounts of speed for an app to play Othello?

Yes there is a World ranking (http://othello.federation.free.fr/fede/class.php3) and also some great place to play online with strong players (http://www.vogclub.com).

We need this power to be able to deeply retro analyse end games (there are generally 60 moves and we want to be able to go back to move 21 or 23 so that we are able to knwo if our opening is good or not).

Do you have a G5 1.8 or 2*2.0 so that you can do the bench for me?

Thx

Hello ...

Here are a few runs on my system
(2x2.0 G5, 1.5 GB RAM, OS X 10.2.8, Safari and paused iTunes idling in the background):

indiceVitesseMac = 11641
indiceVitesseMac = 11678
indiceVitesseMac = 11666
indiceVitesseMac = 11574
indiceVitesseMac = 11646
indiceVitesseMac = 11669
indiceVitesseMac = 11492
indiceVitesseMac = 11592
indiceVitesseMac = 11617
indiceVitesseMac = 11574
indiceVitesseMac = 11661
indiceVitesseMac = 11661
indiceVitesseMac = 11624
indiceVitesseMac = 11662
indiceVitesseMac = 11668
indiceVitesseMac = 11534

Seems pretty consistent. Here's another run:

indiceVitesseMac = 11237
indiceVitesseMac = 11355
indiceVitesseMac = 11209
indiceVitesseMac = 11354
indiceVitesseMac = 11412
indiceVitesseMac = 11351
indiceVitesseMac = 11300
indiceVitesseMac = 11404
indiceVitesseMac = 11278
indiceVitesseMac = 11171
indiceVitesseMac = 11315

Some fluctuation there (~11.5K in the first run to ~11.2K in the second).

I hope this helps.

As for Classic in general: I'm not sure. This past week, my G5 has completely locked up (hard shut-down required) a surprising (and frustrating) number of times while I've been working in HyperCard and/or an old copy of the computer algebra software, Maple V. I haven't quite concluded that Classic (or those programs) are to blame, however.

Great, thx a lot. Are you running 10.2.7 or 10.2.8 ?

Ooops. I thought I'd updated (must've been my previous Mac), but I hadn't. Those number were under 10.2.7.

Now, I _have_ updated to 10.2.8. And these are my new numbers:

indiceVitesseMac = 11549
indiceVitesseMac = 11464
indiceVitesseMac = 11556
indiceVitesseMac = 11466
indiceVitesseMac = 11533
indiceVitesseMac = 11483
indiceVitesseMac = 11519
indiceVitesseMac = 11589
indiceVitesseMac = 11487
indiceVitesseMac = 11424
indiceVitesseMac = 11574
indiceVitesseMac = 11619
indiceVitesseMac = 11493
indiceVitesseMac = 11409
indiceVitesseMac = 11446
indiceVitesseMac = 11524
indiceVitesseMac = 11514
indiceVitesseMac = 11644

So, we're back up to the 11.5K range. Doesn't seem to be any improvement over the 10.2.7 numbers.
