My newspaper office has 4 G4 350s(with 320RAM), a G4 550(320), and two G4 733(256), One of the 733 is running OSX, the others are running 9.2.2
I think we are going to put in a purchase order for afew sticks of 256 thats not a problem, but what about OSX?
We're looking into running Panther on for SURE the 2 733s, and most likely on the 550. But what about the others? will they be able to handle it? how slow will it be? Right now we use the computers for Pagemaker (in classic) Photoshop (we have version 7 for OSX) and we also use the novel agent for shared HDs which i don't think would be an issue bc the OSX machine can mount that shared drive w/o an issue.
So would it be worth it? they're so sick of Postscript errors, and Pagemaker crashing to hell, they want something more stable that can be more reliable....
is OSX the way to go?
give me your thoughts

Having used PageMaker in Classic for several months while I waited for InDesign 2.0 to ship, I can tell you that PageMaker, at least, won't crash any LESS.
We are running 10.2 on several G4 450s and, while they're not exactly speed demons, they're usable. I think it's better to have everyone on the same system. I was amazed how fast I forgot how to troubleshoot problems in OS 9 after using OS X for a while.
When I was using PageMaker in Classic I did not really notice any performance penalty, if that's a concern. It seemed just as responsive as it was when booting OS 9. MUCH snappier than InDesign, at any rate.

My OTHER offices uses InDesign, and i LOVE it, and i know it better then pagemaker...i wish i could get them all to switch over :-( thats the hard part. InDesign is more stable, and just better all around...I think we're more concerned about stability, speed, while its important, its not the end of the world.
anyone else?

Having gone through the same things as you I would recommend either you upgrade to indesign or stick with OS 9
Running Pagemaker (or any DTP app) in Classic stinks, we used Quark 4 in Classic and when we switched to Quark 6 it was worlds better and much more stable, I think Quark is a very stable solution. InDesign, while stable, is slow on older machines, even those 733's would be slow with ID 2
Honestly I would go with Quark 6 if possible or InDesign if you feel it runs acceptably.
A few things to remember when switching to OS X, you need a X-capable font management solution, and if you have a bunch of fonts Font Book ain't it, we use Suitcase, which sucks in X so-far
Another is any scanners make sure they are compatable or you have the budget to buy new ones. Printer drivers, etc.
good luck hope you find a solution!
