F***!!!! My Superdrive is making me crazy. I recently am unable to recognize ANY blank media I put into my Superdrive, CD, DVD, or otherwise. The only change to my system I have recently made was restoring the computer with the restore CD.

What did I do wrong?!?!?!?

I have tried different brands of both CDs and DVDs, I have restarted, I have done everything.

I am ready to throw my Mac out the window.. Arghhhhhhhhhhhh

Hmm. I had a similar problem, but I never got the message from the finder. If you launch, say, Toast, and then insert a disk, what happens?

I don't have toast, so I don't know. However, I can burn a disc from iTunes, evidently. This is nuts. It's a problem w/ Finder? Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

Now I am panicking. How can I possibly fix that ??????

This is completely unacceptable, considering it used to work? What are my options? Am I just screwed?

What does the console report (console.log and system.log). What do you have it set to do when blank media is inserted (via CDs & DVDs pref pane). If the drive can burn in iTunes, its fine.

What kind of drive is it (Vendor Product, Firmware)?

Sounds like a software issue if iTunes will burn a disc but the Finder will not. I'd suspect the hardware is OK.

Do you have any 3rd party software installed (something that might add an extension/kext to the system kernel)?

Since you recently restored your drive off CD, I suspect something became corrupted. I'd do a reformat & re-install.

BTW - We're talking about OS X 10.2.x, I presume?

How would I know? The only 3rd party software I can think of is a Logitech Mouse Driver, which i ran before formatting. I see no reason why it would interfere now?

*Update

Okay, I did that. And Still... The SAME problem. F****************************************ck. What a joke. I can't tell you how frustrating this is. I reinstalled 10.2.6, so it's not 10.2.8. The very first thing I did after the install is put in a new CD, and I'm getting the same error. It can't be a software conflict if the drive is freshly installed, can it?

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease. I am begging somone, PLEASE tell me what to do? Is it curtains for my superdrive? Is it time to revert back to a PC? I will PAY you if I have to. How can a Mac, which supposedly 'just works' be this temperamental after an install???

I purchased my Mac through MacZone, There's no way I can just take it back
WTF am I supposed to do....

Here are some things to try/answer:

1.) DId you try diff. brand media?
2.) Can you burn in Disk Copy?
3.) How much free space is on your boot volume?
4.) What do you have the machine do when you insert blank media (does it bring up the "what to do dialog" normally)?
5.) Will it mount CD-Rom's and DVD-Rom's?

Yes, I have tried every brand, of both DVD and CD nature

2.) Can you burn in Disk Copy?
I don't know. I have nothing to copy

3.) How much free space is on your boot volume?
Tons. That shouldn't be the problem. I have a 120 GB HD w/ the usual OSX install on it. NOTHING else.

4.) What do you have the machine do when you insert blank media (does it bring up the "what to do dialog" normally)?
Nothing. I have it ask me what I want to do.

5.) Will it mount CD-Rom's and DVD-Roms? [/QUOTE][/b]
Yes. It will read them just fine. It just wont recognize ANY blank media.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu dge.
I can't believe this!!!! It's FRESHLY installed OSX. I can't see how on a NEWLY formatted drive, the software is bad! It JUST CAN'T be. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhh

eyenovation, you seriously need to calm down man. I know how frustrating it can be, but screaming on a forum wont fix your problems.

There are 2 things I'd recomend. 1) Delete the finder preferences and the system and user caches.

1)To delete the preferences go to your personal Library folder. Not the main one at the root level of the hard drive, but inside your user folder. Go to Preferences and then delete the file "com.apple.finder.plist"

2) Deleting the caches is easy. The easiest way to do it (without going to 3 different folders or mucking around in the command line). go to macupdate (www.macupdate.com) and download a program called "Cocktail". There are several other programs like this, but this is the one I use. When you have Cocktail running click in the Pilot button at the right of the window and check the option to delete caches and repair permissions. When it's done, it'll prompt you to restart, and you should do that.

edit: i forgot about the part where you said it was a freshly formatted and installed copy of OSX. So next question, are you reusing your previous user folder?

If you aren't, and it's still doing this then there are a couple other things to try. I would reset the Power Manager, zap the pram.

To reset the power manager, look on the mother board for a little button to press, you should see the letters "PMU" next to it on the board.

To zap your pram, hold down command-option-p-r, when the computer first turns on. you'll hear the first chime, continue to hold it down until you hear 4 more chimes, and then let go.

Lastly, if you are really feeling adventurous, after the last chime (basically while the screen is still black and not booted), hold down command-option-o-f, this will then take you into OpenFirmware, the equivilant of the mac bios. type in (without quotes) "reset-nvram" and then after it says OK and puts you on the next line type in "reset-all", it'll then reboot.

After resetting these 3 things (power manager, pram, and open firmware resets of things), you still have problems, on a freshly formatted and installed OSX with no copied over user folder, then it might be time to call apple.

Disk Copy allows you to burn images. Find a .dmg and try to burn it with Disk Copy
