Hey All,
I've read the Rev B G5 Thread and now I'm wondering.... I've been planning on getting a top of the line G5, but now that it's been a while, and January is right around the corner, maybe I should wait for Rev B to buy top of the line? I *can* survive until then although it'll be painful

If you don't need the computer right this very moment, hold off until you do! Heck, when Rev. B comes out, if that doesn't suit your expectations, grab a Dual Rev. A 2Ghz for a nice discount.

It may be announced in Jan but who know when it will ship. Granted it is likely to be mostly just a speed bumped version with a few tweaks here and there but even if Rev. B ships in Feb and there is no real waiting list that is still 4 months form today. The other thing to consider is there may be a dual in the middle of the line-up as well. If you need one now buy it if you don't, well don't buy one.

Keep in mind that Apple likes to try to space out updates by 5-6 months, based on when the last model shipped. If that's the case, then realistically one shouldn't expect new G5s until February or March.

That being said, if what you've got is fast enough, hold on to your money. If IBM really is able to get 2.5 GHz G5s for the first revision, then you may like the corresponding boost in performance.

The G5s are wonderful machines, and will only get more wonderful when upgraded to Panther (MacOS X 10.3), which is due out shortly.

We have two of them in our office (alas, neither of the mine... grr...), and they are beautifully designed, speedy machines.

New/faster computers will always be introduced. The decision to get a new computer should be based on how much you'll take advantage of the new machine in the meantime.

I don't think you will see new ones in January so you might be in for a long wait.

A dual 2.0 isn't fast enough for you?

If waiting will be painful I don't see much point in it - you probably won't see new ones ship for another 4-5 months. But everybody's different.

The G5s really arrived in September. I'd say to look for Jobs' promise of 3GHz "a year from now" by September 2004, in which case speed-bumped G5s arrive around March, if the speed bumps will be spaced in 6 month increments.

The exciting breakthrough for the G5s would be dual configs in the low and mid end, or at least in the mid-end.

I'm holding out for a dual 3GHz+ machine in the first half of 2005, hopefully with more expandability in that positively massive chassis.

It's highly unlikely that new G5s will either be announced or especially shipped in January. The current models shipped in September, you really think new ones are going to be out 3-4 months later? That's crazy.

This reminds me of the whole Aluminum PowerBook ship date guessing game. When the 12 and 17" Pbooks shipped last January, tons of people figured 15" replacements for the Titanium were just around the corner. Then March came and went. Then April. Then May, June, July, August. It ended being 9 months later before there were 15" Alu books, or revisions for the 12 and 17" models.

If you're planning on new G5s in Jan or Feb, I think you're in for a let down. Get the machine you want now if you could use it!

I second that. If you need a machine, buy it. No sense waiting, there is always be a better machine 6 months away.

Yes, truer words could not be spoken. When it's time to buy a new computer, do it. If you can wait, then you don't truly need a new one right now.

What I do it wait until I need a new one, then buy the best I can - that way I've got plenty of growing room. Buying a new middle-of-the-line (or lower) puts you right at the bottom of the heap when the new ones are out. While this may not be the most financially responsible way, it's what I like to do.
