I'm buying a 512 Stick of ram for my friends iMacDV, the original model. (FW, 400Mhz G3, no DVD). I know that it takes PC100 or PC133 memory.
Anyone know what type of PC100 it will take? On Pricewatch I see 64x64, 64x4, 16 chips, a million different versions. In the past I've gotten the wrong kind an had it show up as 256 in certain machines, but 512 in others.
What kind will my buddies iMac take so he can use the full 512 the stick has?

PC-100 SDRAM, 3.3 V, unbuffered, 64-bit wide, 168-pin module, maximum height of 50 mm.

iMac (All Models): Memory Specifications and Upgrades

That Pricewatch site looks dicey unless you really know what you're doing. Buy cheap generic RAM at your own risk -- and especially not if you're buying for a friend.

My recommendation: go to Ramseeker, select your Mac model from the pulldown menu at the upper left, check out the prices, and then go with a vendor with an established track record -- and a lifetime warranty.

I've used pricewatch many times in the past. As long as you do your homework (like I was trying to do with this thread) you wind up with CHEAP working ram. I'd rather pay 38 bucks for 512MB vs. $80 for Mac tuned memory. There's no difference between the two. Websites that take the time to put "G3 & G4 RAM" get a $40 markup? F That.

What won't work? 64x64 or 64x4?

Regardless of the 64x64, you just need to be sure you get low density ram. My $38 512MB stick from pricewatch worked.
