Hi,

I've an external LaCie d2 FireWire400 200GB that I purchased in March 2003 and used only 10 min. to make a backup before selling my old beige. Now a dual g5 is coming...
I will make projects in iMovie/Final Cut Express/iDVD and use the drive only for DV. Now that FW800 and SATA drives are out (the dual I purchased sports only a 250MB drive) I'm asking if it is possible to stripe two external LaCie d2 FireWire400 200GB to obtain a speed up or if this will slowdown the data throughput and if FW400 is well suited for home/semiprofessional DV.

Many Thanks
Sam

FW400 will work OK for FCP, but most pros still think that it's too slow. For the type of stuff it sounds like you are going to be doing you should be OK tho. Instead of the RAID, you should just keep the drive, sell the case. Use the cash swallow some of the cost for a new FW800 case.

Is it possible to do an enclosure swap FW400->FW800? In what components do they differ if a simple swap is possible and the internal mechanic is the same type (type I don't know: ATA-something?)?

As for the hard drive, a FW400 to FW800 case swap should just be a matter of popping the drive out of one case and into the other. The internal connections should all be the same. FW800 uses a different cable to connect the case to the compute tho.
