I have just acquired a new imac, well its an old 400mhz slot loader, 80gb hard drive, dvd, 512 ram running os x 10.2.6.

But it seems to be crashing an awful lot, i leave it on for a while and it just freezes and doesn;t do anything which results in a reset.

Ripping cd's workings for a while then the import becomes slow then stops altogether which crashes itunes which also ends up in a reset.

Is there anything i could do, i have run norton and it says theres problem on the disk that needs to be repaired, but since i can't find the cd anymore i can't do this. i have used the repair in disk utility, is there anything else i can do?

Since I imagine you bought it used, the first thing I'd do is a nuke and pave. Reinstall everything. No telling what the previous owner had installed that could be giving you problems.

the hard drive was partioned with os x on one and os 9 on the other, if i format the drive will the partitions remain?
How could i get rid of the partions and format the drive?

I'm not to sure about how to do this

Assuming you have the Jaguar Install Cd's (10.2) then when you go to install (after running off the disc by pressing c while on boot w/ cd inserted) select the clean install which will totally wipe the drive clean, partitions and all.

ok thanks, if i format the disk will it fix the problem that was encountered on the disk? or is it better to sort out the problem first then reformat?

I have 10.0.0 on disk, but i have 10.2.6 on cd but it came with my ibook, can i use the ibook cds or do i have to use the 10.0.0.

Yep. This should not be a problem.
