Couldn't really find a more appropriate forum than this one, so here goes.
My sister is in college and wants a Powerbook but doesn't know if my parents are eligible to purchase one for her and finance it thru apple using the educational discount. Can they purchase it for her, or does she have to be the one buying it?
The details on Apples page seem to indicate that you can only purchase it using the educational discount and financing if you yourself are faculty, staff, or a student.

Who is Eligible To Purchase
The following education individuals are eligible to purchase through the Apple Store for Education individuals:
Faculty or staff member of a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States
Student currently attending or accepted into a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States
Qualifying purchases per academic school year (July 1 - June 30):
Power Mac, iMac, eMac, PowerBook, or iBook - One per year
Printers - One per year
Displays - Two per year
Software - Two per year
Agreement
I agree that I am a member of one of the defined groups above eligible to purchase and that the products being purchased direct from Apple Computer, Inc. are for my own personal, education, and/or research use.
My mother is a teacher and always purchaces through apple education. I don't know if they do a actual background check, it might just be an "honor code" kind of thing. Why can't your rents just give her the money?

SHE can buy it with your parent's credit card. That's what I did and it worked - there was no way I could've purchased my pb with my low limit cc.
ETA: wait, I missed the part about financing. I have no idea how that works. She might want to give Apple a call.

Apple seems to be fairly loose with their standards. 2 weeks ago when I got my new mac the lady at the counter encouraged me to find a way to use the educational discount. i don't think you'll have a tough time getting around it.

Apple are pretty lax about it. I have heard that do randomly check up to make sure that you are a student/teacher, but that doesn't happen to often I assume.

AFAIK a campus bookstore only needs the reference number of the Apple Loan to use it, so it doesn't matter who took out the loan (within reason, should be a family member with approval) for a student to use it.
...At least that's what I did.

Thanks for the info. They'll probably end up just letting her use their credit card.
