I would a G4 tower with a superdrive. But it appears the only way to get that directly right now is to buy it from apple.

i'm looking to save money on the get go, so I was thinking of buying a 1.25 single processor G4 with the built in stuff and then later upgrade for 200 bucks to the superdrive.

Is it hard to install?

My reason for this is, if you buy from the apple store I have to buy sales tax, which is almost 9 percent where I live and adds another 200 easy.

So I can save the 200 bucks up front and then use it later to buy a superdrive and space it out.

Use the 200 on a monitor.

Right now I'm using an ibook 500.

I running Final Cut Pro 3 and it works fine.

But I want to use FCP 4 and Soundtrack.

Would buying the Dual 1.25 be worth the money?

Any place to buy the dual besides the apple store?

I checked E-bay, but there just seems to be so many scams and people over paying.

thanks for the tips.

On clubmac they have a 1 and a 1.25 available... the only difference I see is the 1 comes with FW 800 and that seems like a sweet deal.

I wasn't paying attention, what is the newer system?

I assume the 1.25, but why does the slower processor the one with the FW 800?

Try calling some local Apple stores and asking about refreshed systems. I just got a dual 1ghz for $1099 from the Durham, NC store and it's great! The only problem I had was that the mouse was busted. I called apple last Saturday morning and it arrived on Tuesday by noon...and the mail wasn't running on Monday! Not bad.

There's some money to be saved doing it like this but it requires some footwork to find a store that's selling the system you want.

If you can stretch the budget to $1599 the dual processor 1.25 would be the way to go. FCP 4 benefits a great deal from dual processors.

Check out http://www.smalldog.com/category/x/x...g101/wag10001/

You won't pay any sales tax if you buy from them unless you're a Vermont resident.

Yeah, either get it from Apple's "Special Deals" section or a reseller like SmallDog.com.

DEFINITELY get the Dualie if there's anyway possible, and really stray from the Single 1Ghz b/c it went back to the old 133Mhz FSB.

I love my Dual 1.25Ghz...it's fast man, escp. on dual-proc. aware apps.

Yeah, the Durham store is REALLY nice! Unfortunately it's about a 4.5 hour drive. The wife and kids (1 boy aged 2.5 and 1 girl 9 months) made the trek last week. Drove up on Thurs night and spent the night in Highpoint and then finished the rest of the drive on Fri morning. (Got home around 3 on Friday) BUT IT WAS WORTH IT.

And Assassyn, thanks for the complement on the sig. I dig yours too. Done many a lesson from "The Love" chapter.

Mallrat,I have to agree. Go dual if you can. This thing is fast and it's just a dual 1gig. I can only imagine how fast the 1.25 and 1.42 dualies are. Do it if you can handle the cash flow.

Can both the quicksilver and the MDD drives add another drive internally?

the MDD looks like it has 2 slots, but I think I remember the quicksilver only have one place to put a DVD-R.

Just thought about that, because the new G5 only have one place which is fine, but sometimes you want to copy something from a CD or DVD to another CD or DVD.

Thanks.

The MDD can have another optical drive (cd/cdrw/dvd-r) while, I believe, the QS only has one optical drive bay. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Check out www.everymac.com and you can see what machines have which features.

I have a dual 1ghz MDD and just added a second optical drive 2 weeks ago. and I add that it was very easy took maybe 10 minutes and after d/l a hacked driver from xlr8yourmac.com everything worked perfectly. I'm also agreeing with everyone else thats saying go dual its worth it.

True, but Mallrat was asking about the single processor 1.25. According to Apple:

http://www.apple.com/hardware/powermacg4/specs.html

the 1.25ghz machine has the 167mhz bus.
