My CPU makes a high pitched oscillating noise only when processing heavily or doing lots of network activity. It goes away entirely and instantly when I put the Processor Performance from Highest to Automatic. This is done in the Energy Saver pane of the System Preferences under the Option view.

What makes this noise? Should I ask Apple to fix it?

Who has heard this? What does it take to make the noise happen?

Is this a dual G5 issue (mine is dual), or all G5s?

There is reference to this noise in another thread but I think this deserves its own thread.

You can read several threads about this problem here:

Have you downloaded the CHUD utility?

I don't know, but my new dual G5 is doing the same thing -- mostly audible in the Analog Line Out. Highest/Automatic doesn't make any difference. Turning off "Nap" with the CHUD tools almost gets rid of it completely, but I heard Apple doesn't recommend that as a permanent fix. It looks like Apple's probably gonna send out a new power supply for me like they've done for some other people.

I'm also having a "computer won't boot up sometimes" problem after it's been off/asleep for several hours. I & Apple are currently looking into it. It's possible that's also a power supply problem.

I really love my G5, it's a great box. Just gotta iron out some bugs, that's all.
