Hello all, I just ordered a G5 1.6 today with the standard Geforce FX 5200. I currently have a G4 with a Geforce 4 Ti 128mb. My question is if I'd be better off to keep the FX in the G5, or swap the cards. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I don't think the GF4Ti in your G4 will fit in the G5. The G5 has a reworked power connector for the ADC port power. Apple did this because the 8XAGP Pro spec has a different location for a power connector to the card. The short of it is that the power connector for the ADC connector is not in the same place.

Oh crap. I didn't know that or I would have gotten the Radeon 9600. Well, I don't have any interest in gaming, so would there be any noticible difference in 2D and and QE performance between the 5200 and an upgraded card?

Sorry if I'm asking a common question, I'm pretty new to macs.

I have a 1.6 with the 5200 card and am very happy with the graphics performance. I also don't do games (much).

NAh,the FX 5200 should be fine for 2D.

How big and fast is your G4? I have the 1.6GHz with 5200 and I'm more than satisfied with the speedup. Of course I've moved up from a Beige G3. I also ordered 1 GByte of RAM for the G5 right after I got my shipping confirmation. The biggest difference you'll see is this thing doesn't slow down at all, no matter what you run. It is truly a beast! I just acquired a dual 1GHz mirrored door G4 server and it bogs down when running 2 copies of SETI@Home. On my G5, I burned two cd's at the same time using Toast and Apple's disk burner with a Firewire CDRW and the Superdrive all the while SETI was running and while I was playing with Maya. It is an impressive piece of engineering.

My G4 was a 400mhz Gigabit Ethernet, which I upgraded with a Gigadesigns 800mhz processor, and 1gb PC100 ram.

I installed 1gb Crucial DDR333 into the G5 before I ever turned it on. It's running beautifully, and the FX5200 has been fine so far. I'm currently running the 22" cinema display and was thinking about getting another, but was afraid that 64mb wouldn't be enough to get QE performance when I went dual monitors.

Can't wait to get Panther on here...

QE performance will be just fine (i.e., not diminished at all) with 32MB per monitor.
