I've made similar posts, but if I buy the current G4 offerings of 1.25 single chip from a reseller, will if have fan noise?

Was the fan noise problem, a problem on all G4's or just the MDD. Or the quicksilver?

Looking to buy a new single chip or a used G4 wiht a processor about 733. But I don't want one if it's so loud everyone is complaining.

I would have the tower under my desk, would I hear it then?

All computers except the cube, and some of the iMacs have fan noise. It was only really a problem (post-G3, anyway) on the first revision MDD powermacs <glares at dual 867>. Most towers are loud enough that you can hear them under the desk (not only MDD towers).

The MDD are very quite after the upgrade, the Quicksilvers are not so quite.

The new G4's offered on Apple's site are very quiet, and the FW800 models were pretty quiet also. The ones BEFORE the FW800 Macs were pretty loud.

Is there an easy way to tell which the FW800 Macs were? By processor speed, for example?

They are *somewhat* quiet after the upgrade. I have one.

Well, 1.42GHz was only available in FW800 flavour, but 1GHz and 1.25GHz was available in both. The difference is that one has Firewire 800 and AirPort Extreme, the other has Firewire 400 and AirPort non-Extreme. I would hope that the G4s Apple is selling now, despite the fact they are the Firewire 400 variety, have the updated fans and things as standard.

I don't know if I woudl assume the ones apple is selling now has the updated fans.

Was the fan fix everyone is talking about for this batch of towers, or was it for all towers?

I would prefer to buy it used, or from a reseller to save money, but I don't want it to be so loud that I can't even think.

I have a dual MDD and its the loud G4 as things go but its not crazy. Last year I was in a small dorm room and had it under my desk and I could only hear it when I restarted (once a month). This year my room is a bit bigger and its sitting on my desk and I can hear it (and its louder than I the G5 I saw today) but it doesn't bother me at all. I also added a second hard drive and another optical drive and that hasn't contributed to any more noise that I can tell, except on restart when it goes into jet/turbo mode for a few seconds.

It pains me that there is no answer. I wonder if apple knows!

I have a 1.42 dual G4 FW800..purchased this spring.

It is very quiet. I don't hear the fan except for a brief 5 seconds when it is booting up.

It is not silent. But definately very very very very low noise.

Nothing at all like the leafblower models that preceded it.

It was a big concern of mine before I purchased mine. I made some low quality audio recordings of my old g4 400 compared to my NEW 1.42 dual. You can hear them for yourself at:

Hi!

If I'm not mistaken, the FW800 line featured a single CPU 1GHz, the older MDD line a Dual 1GHz.
I have the single 1,25GHz and I can hear it under the desk, but I don't find it disturbing. Some people seem to be more sensitive, though.

I guess we didn't resolve the question that Mallrat posed--are the newest single processor 1.25 GHz machines (M9145LL/A) substantially quieter than the original MDD Dual 867. Has anyone owned or extensively used both in order to compare?
