i assume the dual 800 would be faster than the single 867, but by how much?

10 percent? 25 percent?

Which one would you want for video editing?

Which would you want? DEFINATELY dual 800 over the 867.

Dual 800 will 'feel like' at least a 1.25ghz single.

But they are much louder, too.

If for FCP the dual 800 is a great machine. I had a dual 800 before my dual G5 and the dual 800 was a very nice machine for FCP. It would easily dust the single 867. The dual 800 was a top of the line model ands while I think the single 867 had a better l3 cache the dual 800 has 2x2MB of L3 cache to make up for this. In real numbers expect in rendering to see it beating the single 867 by 50-75% easily.

Even when not using the things that are smp supported just the general user experience will be much more responsive with a dual.

damn lucky person I will be lucky to replace my dual g4 with a dual g6

Like I said the only bad thing about the dualie is it's noise. The dual 800 can be, depending on how lucky you are, one of the noisiest macs there is.. I'm positive mine is lol.

Why is this? When they released them they were basically a bit of luck. Dual 7450s on a small heatsink like that isn't easy.

The next gen of machines used dual 7455s, which ran SIGNIFICANTLY cooler. The dual 1ghz put out about as much heat as the 867 I think.

Of course it depends too, in my room which is usually about 65-70º, the fans are constantly at near full blast, which sounds like a small hair dryer on medium.

Oh yeah and in the morning I find my office tends to be *just* a bit warmer then the rest of the house.. no big deal, though.

But it shouldn't really stop you from getting a dual 800 as I said before, mine has been totally awesome and about the only thing I'd take in place of it is a dual 2ghz g5, maybe even a 1.8.. hehe ^_^

You have to remember the quicksilver design was also one of the sexiest ever, it's smooth and clean

Definitely take the dual 800 over a single 867. There is no question. Even if you ripped out processor #2, there'd only be a 66.666MHz difference between the two machines.

lol yeah and it's physically impossible to do that.

lemme elaborate this. I downloaded CHUD a few weeks ago and messed around.

disabling the 2nd processor almost drops performance by 80%.. not 50%, 80%.

Why? CPU bandwidth, DUAL 2mb l3 cache, the list goes on.

point blank it's a *HUGE* advantage.
