I use a dual 1.25 G4 with 20" cinema at work - new last April. We are getting a new G5 for web site QC/QA work and I can have it if I want it. (If I take the G5 testing will get my G4). I am not sure I will gain enough to warrant the move and related headaches of softwqare migration, etc. What I need to know is which G5 would make the move worthwhile - if any. Will I notice a difference? I pretty much live in Photoshop 7 and I'll keep my cinema display.

I'm guessing that you would get a 1.6 G5. If that's the case, I can see why you would debate. If you were getting a dual then hell yeah. Otherwise I would say hold off, and when the next new machine comes around, grab that.

Get the G5 - One thought though, do you have any PCI cards in the G4? The G5 uses a different voltage level for the PCI cards. (it could be 5.5 volts, not sure though)

That could be your only issue that I see. Otherwise get the G5.

This is actually because of PCI-X. The PCI 2.1 Standard that has been around for several years defines 3.3V for PCI cards, PCI-X however uses only 3V but is fully compatible to PCI 2.1 (as far as I know, not 100% sure about that though). If you want to use any PCI-X cards than you'll cannot use any PCI 2.1 cards because in that case, the entire PCI bus is going back to compatibility mode - 33 MHz, 32-bit.

Thanks for the input. I don't use PCI cards and I have never noticed my G4 being loud (the server room - now that's loud! - 55 Dell servers, 4 Sun Solaris boxes, 2 Vax machines and an Apple Xserve).

What I decided was to spec a dual processor G5 and if that is approved, I'll swap. Otherwise, I will wait for the next desktop refresh or other opportunity. Probably end up with something even cooler. Again, thanks!
