I have to add a 2nd drive to my dualie before Panther comes home and I am undecided as to which of these 2 drives is better.

They have the same basic specs, 250GB, 7200rpm and 8MB cache, but Maxtor offers a 5 year warranty instead of 3 for WD, but WD claims a very quiet drive mechanism, which I would value more than a longer warranty.

Would appreciate any feedback from users of these drives.

Also knows of any tests/reviews on either of these drives anywhere online?

Thanks.

I have read that current Maxtors are quieter than WDs. Here's a good source for information: www.storagereview.com

Also check www.pcworld.com (top ten drives)

I have the WD 250GB in my dual G5 and it seems fairly quiet. The problem with the G5 is that its so quiet you notice any and all drive noise. Newegg has both drives at pretty good prices now.

Great links zigzag, thanks a lot. I found all my answers on storagereview. I will go with maxtor as they are indeed quieter drives and yet excellent performers.

And yes Hydra, this is exactly my experience. My G5 is in fact so quiet (and full of holes) that all I hear 90% of the time is the drive. The worst offender though is clearly the superdrive, but I can live with that, especially when every other parts and aspect of this machine is pure bliss!

Peace

StorageReview lists the Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 as the current leader in the ATA/SATA LeaderBoard, being the faster and one of the most quiet drives available on the market, beating the previous WD/Maxtor offerings.
