We have a strawberry iMac 266. Original standard except 40Gb HD (3rd replacement, MAC store 7200rpm), new 256 Mb Crucial RAM in bottom slot, old style wide 128MB in top slot.
Currently experiencing many problems.
Last week, Finder quit with Error Type 41. Knowledge Base solution (remove System Folder, Fonts, Prefs, etc) didn't work.
Tried booting from Apple CD MacOS 9.1, get Error Type 41. Booting from Apple CD MacOS 8.5.1 crashes Finder during clean install.
Eventually reformatted entire HD, MacOS 9.1 CD install still gets error type 41, sometimes get MacOS 8.5 CD installed but then continually crashes randomly with errors 1, 2, 12..., reboot crashes, etc.
When it does boot we always get the Happy MAC.
Any ideas?? We are getting desperate.
CMOS Battery failure? RAM chip failure? Other H/W, S/W?
