I ask about this because I read several times about people that replace the original cd rom drive of their B&W and put a DVD drive, then they say that they can view dvd movies, hum, but do they need replace the ati 128 ?, the B&W that has dvd from factory, has a 'add-on' board over the ati 128, right?

that is, if I put a dvd drive inside my G3, could be possible to view dvd movies?, I do not think so :-/

firstly, the dvd drive must be supported and secondly, there is the ati 128 issue, at least that was my though, but I read this in xlr8:

Drive Type: DVD+RW
Drive Interface: IDE
Drive Brand: Philips
Drive Model Number: DVDRW1208 12x,10x, 2.4x
Driver Used: Apple Standard
Mac Model: Apple BW G3
Mac OS Version: OS X
Reader Comments: OS 10.1.5
B&W G3 - 350MHz (I think it is a Rev 1 Model...has an adb port on back and oem ide cable is for only 1 hard drive.) (see the main www.xlr8yourmac.com systems page, G3 macs section for an article on the features of the rev B models - most important is the IDE chip revision. ADB port is on all B&W G3s though.-Mike) I was able to install this new burner in minutes thanks to Mike's "Illustrated CDROM/CDRW/DVDROM Installation Guide"!

Restarted in os 10.1.5 and ran system profiler: Apple disc burning supported.

Watched a DVD movie!
Checked iPhoto...can burn!
Checked iTunes..."disc burner or software not found"

So, mine is a B&W 350 rev. B, and since Panther is said to have better dvd drive support...

Pioneer DV-106D Works with OS X 10.2.x and Panther. Nothing needed

Under OS 9, a blue and white G3 (as well as the Yikes! G4) require DVD Player 1.3 and the hardware decoder daughtercard to play DVDs, although DVD Player 2.x has been hacked to play DVDs on those machines even without the decoder.

On OS X (which includes DVD Player 3.0 or higher), you do not need the DVD decoder card. In fact, if you have it, it will go unused.

oh, those are great news, just one question, the Pioneer DV-106D is a DVD ROM, right?

maybe the Pioneer DVR-A05 would work in same way?

Thanks to both.

Any ATA/IDE/EIDE DVD-ROM will work just fine. Just unplug the audio, ata, and power cables, remove the drive, slide the new one into place, and plug it all back in. It's a snap.
