My Quicksilver 867 has started having trouble reading some cds and dvds. Not all, but some that have worked in the past.

When I insert a broken CD it never shows up in the Finder and usually the drive will pop the CD out in a few minutes. The weird thing is that after that happens I can't use the eject button on the keyboard anymore. It won't close the cd tray or do anything. It does show the overlay on the screen though.

If I reboot with the CD in the drive it will eject and I won't be able to use my eject button. Some of my DVDs will show up in the finder for a moment and DVD player will launch but then it stalls and I can't get the CD out of the drive. One time I was able to get the DVD playing with VLC and THEN it started working with DVD Player but that was only once.

I've tried all these discs on my powerbook and they all work fine. Anyone else ever had a problem like this?

well, all signs point to a dying optical drive?

why are you putting in a 'broken' cd??

Heh, I didn't mean literally broken, but it's not working in my powermac. Other cds work the same as before though.

Is it possible to install a superdrive in a quicksilver if I buy the same pioneer model?

Yeah that's no problem. In fact, 867 Quicksilvers came with Pioneer DVR-A04 I believe. (could be A03) The latest version is DVR-A06. The difference is that the newer one supports 4x dvd burning and as well, DVD+R/RW support.
