I just received a new dual 2ghz G5 yeterday, and it's been having a strange problem. It will read a single firewire disk fine, but as soon as it tries to mount a second one, it will immediately unmount the first (even if it is in use). After an incident like this happens, the G5 usually won't shut down properly; it will get stuck at, if not completely freeze up at, the activity indicator (spinny gear thingy) during the shutdown phase.
To try to fix this, I've zapped the PRAM, tried using a number of different firewire drives and devices to see if it was a specific drive/case/cable, reinstalled multiple versions of the system, and I just finished reformatting and reinstalling. The problem persists.
My thoughts on this are that it's most likely a hardware or firmware issue... and since no firmware updates have been released for the G5 yet, it doesn't seem like there's a lot I can do to fix it.... but there are a lot of clever people here who might have a trick or two up their sleeves. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there a fix to it that doesn't involve returning/exchanging my G5? Thanks for your help.

Also, there's an intermittent scraping/chirping noise coming from the processor/fan area. It's faint, but piercing, and it can get pretty annoying... I've heard it mentioned before. Did anyone ever find a fix for this, or am i stuck with it?

I've tried both 10.2.7 and 10.3. I'm currently running 10.3.
