I have an iMac DV+ 450/20GB with 192MB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade the HD to something in the 40-60GB range. I did this before when I first bought it but the thing was so loud (and possibly too hot for the fanless iMac) that I returned it. Can I still buy a 40-60GB 5400 rpm HD somewhere online? How much should I expect to pay? Is this going to be a problem because my machine doesn't have a fan?

Thanks,
D

Yes, its no problem. Many 7200rpm drives these days will be cool enough for your iMac. Buy a hard drive anywhere (newegg.com ?? they're usually pretty good ... but there are many others). Check this site and put "hard drive" in the "drive type" dropdown and "Imac slot loading" in the "select a mac model" dropdown. You'll have more info than you need.

I have an 80gb seagate 7200.7 in my G3 450. Quiet, cool, and works like a charm. I paid about $75 for it 6 months ago (and Seagates are relatively expensive .. many brands will be cheaper and prices may have dropped since then.)

G'day!

Has anyone had any (good or bad) experience with a Hitachi 120GB 180GXP (DIBMIC35L0120) 7200RPM ATA100 2MB IDE?

I can get one from here for AU$200 for my iMac DV 400MHz - as far as I can see it would work OK, but please let me know if it won't!

Cheers,

Geoff

Krusty,

Am I going to have to partition the first 8GB like some people have had to do?

Thanks,

No .. the slot loaders do not have that issue, only the original tray loading iMacs. I have 35 and 40 gb partitions (the drive actually formats to 75.43 gb).

Try out the link Krusty posted above. Those reader reports excellent information.

And Danoir, some people have said modern 7200 rpm drives run cooler than the older 5400 rpm drives that shipped with your iMac. Mine's been a little hotter since getting it's Western Digital SE 120 GB drive, but I just make sure it can get lots of air underneath and it's fine.
