has anyone heard anything about any new iMacs coming soon? Apple's got new iBooks, so what about new iMacs? I'm asking because I bought the 2nd gen iPod 3 weeks before the 3rd gen arrived. I don't wanna get this iMac a few weeks before a new iMac comes out and get screwed. i'm also making the switch from Windows, so I wanna get the latest iMac out there. one other thing, I wasn't planning on making my purchase until april. any news or suggestions?

The iMacs were updated recently. If you were buying now, I'd normally say go for it because Apple waits a few months between updates. However, because the iMac has such a horrible price/performance ratio now, I wouldn't be surprised at some deep price cuts just before holiday buying season. If you're going to be waiting until April, I'd say get the next update. April is seven months from September, so iMacs should be due for an update anytime in April or later. However, considering the flat panel iMac's upgrade history, it might be as late as summer or fall 2004 before the iMac gets an update. The first revision (700 CDRW/700 Combo/800 Super) went from January 2002 to February 2003 - an absolutely inexcusable 13 months. The next update went from February 2003 to September 2003 - seven months, pretty standard.
I still think you should wait it out and buy the next revision if you want to wait until April. The problem is if you wait until April, you'll be afraid to buy anything until an update because you'll be expecting it at any time. If you buy now you KNOW your machine will be up to date for at least a few months, which is the best you can hope for in the computing world.
Anyway, you might want to wait a month or so for some price cuts, because the iMacs really do need them, at $500 more than an eMac.
EDIT: Changed my post because the iMacs were updated in September, not October. D'oh!

You said that the iMacs have a horrible price/performance ratio. What do you mean by that? The articles make it seem as if the iMacs are second only to the G5's. Do you mind elaborating? (Thanks for all the great feedback by the way.)

I think what he meant was that the imac's performance is not much better than emacs, which cost $500 less. You're just paying extra for the LCD and coolness factor, performance being the same between the two.
Heck, the old G4 towers come pretty close to beating the imacs in performance/price as well, even with the extra you'll spend on a cinema display. You get L3 cache and expandability, but a lot more noise and less appealing form factor.

MacRumors buying advice is Buy.
http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
The iMac was updated in early September.
There was a rumor last week about redesigned iMacs, made in China, and getting a makeover.
But that's a rumor. I don't buy it. I think the iMac is still the best looking desktop computer on the market - bar none.
Why fix what ain't broke?
I'm getting a Powerbook soon, but I ordered this iMac when they were announced. It has been essentially problem free and fun to use. And I use it about 10 hours a day.

I just hope the price goes down a little so I can buy one to videochat with my family. They are so cool and do not take much bench space.

So what is wrong with Apple taking its time between revisions?
Each release brings something new or adds things that weren't in the previous iMac.
Obviously, this fellow can wait until April, just don't expect a G5 iMac.
Who has the money to buy a new iMac every 7 months? I sure don't.

If you weren't planning to purchase until April, at least wait till MWSF in January.
