what is a realistic date for the next g5 update next developer conference? Will it be dual 3ghz?

I dont need a g5 at this moment but in near future it will be a long lasting tool that must last a while in all speed departments.

thanks

wouldn't be surprised to see an update before the next wwdc, but you never know with apple! if you need a g5 now, then pick up a new dual--you won't regret it--and if next time you need that shiny new 3ghz, then your 2ghz dual will hold a nice chunk of it's value to put towards that next box. IMO, the new dual 2's are sure to be useful for quite some time; even after there are new dual 3's out.

Since IBM seems to be capable of pushing out new chips quicker then Motorola, I expect that Apple will probably do more speed bumps with little fanfare over time.

Keep in mind WWDC this year was delayed, it might move back to April/Mayish next year. I do expect the first hardware changes in the G5 to probably show up around summer next year though. Most likely minor things, like bumping all models to PCI-X if it becomes cost effective enough.

Mind you, this is all speculation based on what I see, and no actual basis in fact. Pinning down specifics is pretty hard from the outside. And the info I do know from time to time, well, stays quiet.

I doubt that Apple will let the G5 languish for a year; if you claim you have the fastest personal computer, you can't let yourself be eclipsed like that.

What I'm hearing at the moment is February. That's roughly 6 months from when the G5 initially started shipping, and lets Apple do a third G5 lineup around August (which meets the "end of summer" quote from Jobs at the Paris expo).

Apple has to have an aggressive clock speed boost, and we know IBM can do it: 90-nanometer chips should be feasible by the end of this year or early in the next, and they've already had 2.5 GHz prototypes earlier this year. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a G5 lineup that started at 2 GHz and finished around 2.4-2.6 GHz.
