I'm pretty sure that 120gig IS the limit.

goto xlr8yourmac - yosemite for more info.

With a Rev 1 you need to watch out for data corruption due to the buggy IDE controller. The xlr8yourmac.com drive reports database is a good place to start in order to find a compatible drive. Not sure if any are that large, however.

I thought that the corruption issue only affected a system with a 2nd hard drive. Maybe I better double check.

Yes that is the limit IF the HD is connected to the mobo controller.

However, if you were to add an ATA/133 controller card, you could go as big as you want

I had my friends 2-160gb WD's in my B&W last week....notta problemo

The blue and white does NOT need OS X in the first 8GB. That limitation is only in early iMacs and beige G3s.

As for the drive size limit: on the motherboard IDE connector, I wouldn't put ANY modern drive on it -- those controllers are EXTREMELY unreliable with basically any drive that came out after that machine was made. (Rev B blue and white G3s can accept up to 120GB drives.)

So either get an ATA card (find out what the card's maximum drive size is), or get a FireWire enclosure (also find out its maximum supported drive).

For ATA controllers affected by the size limit, the limit is actually 128 GB (real binary size) or 137 GB (advertised decimal size).

If you were to put in a 160 GB (advertised) drive, it would format but would appear as a 128 GB drive. The last 21.5 GB of drive space would not be available for any purpose. It would get you 16 GB more real space than using a 120 GB (advertised) drive.

If that 160 GB drive had been formatted elsewhere to it's full size, the volume would not work properly on your more limited controller. If it mounted at all, some files would misread or be unreachable - the ones that had parts in the unreachable 21.5 GB of space at the end.
