I have a slot-loading iMac DV (graphite) which will no longer connect to the internet. The message I get is that the modem cannot detect a dial tone. I have not yet tried to reinstall OSX, but have run disk utility, and tech tools. Tech tools didn't seem to detect any hardware problems. When looking under system profiler the network category is completely blank. I have a feeling a recent thunderstorm may have hosed the modem. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I would love to hear of a solution that doesn't involve replacing the entir motherboard.

Yes. To other people at any rate; I couldn't count the number of toasted (on a PC) modems I've replaced.

The only iMacDV that I've taken apart (indigo? -purple at any rate) had a modem card that plugged into the mainboard. As long as you can find a replacement modem, it shouldn't be to tough to replace.

Hmmm..will have to begin the hunt, or just use an external. Or get broadband...
