When you boot up a new machine for the first time, it goes through the registration process (remember the Welcome screen and the jugggling blue blobs?). If you cancelled out of it then, you need to do it manually now, I think.

It should leave a shortcut you can follow to send the registration, in your desktop or home folder...

I don't think it does it automatically if you choose to send the registration later.

I had originally set up my G5 in my living room first, with no 'net connection, and once I hooked it up in my office, there was a shortcut in my Home folder that I had to manually activate in order to register. I don't think anything automatic happens.

You could always visit this page to make sure.

No, but it's a good idea to register anyway - that way if you have a problem, they'll have a record of the purchase. Just go to the apple.com support page and click on "Register product." You'll get a free subscription to a magazine too.

...and if you register, they'll remind you just before your "free" year is up that you can still buy applecare to get an extra 2 years.

also - they have recently been sending out (to usa customers anyway, that purchased through the apple store online) "coupons" for discounts on other stuff.....if you register you never know what you might get later!

lastly - to get the upgrade to 10.3 for 19.95 shipping, you had to have the product registered or their database did not recognize the s/n as valid for the up-to-date.

I hate to throw some rain on this parade, but it just may not be a good idea to register immediately, at least until you're confident your machine is working fine. You see, while I can't verify this second-hand report, a poster on AppleInsider said that registering precludes you from returning the machine for a different unit -- you can only have it serviced from then on. According to this person, once you register the machine is permanently yours according to Apple (at least, unless and until you sell it). With my next CPU purchase I'm going to wait a month or two before I submit my online registration.

It probably has nothing to do with it - ordering the update, that is. The only caveat is that it may not be such a good idea to hold off registering until after upgrading the OS. The upgrade may break a few things, including your ability to send your registration in. It really shouldn't, but you may not want to take that chance.
