I have a 1.25GHz 17" iMac with 768mb RAM (512mb from Crucial) and two 120Gb FW HD's attached - both 400 not 800. Any poblems lying in store for me when Panther eventually ships from Apple Store?
Thanks

The Panther problems were with FireWire 800 drives, not 400. So you should be fine.

Nope, according to MacFixit and arstechnica:
Oxford Semiconductor has also indicated the problem may not be confined to drives with the 922 chipset, and there are indeed reports that some Firewire 400 drives have been affected as well. Check out MacFixIt's coverage for the detailed scoop.
So be very careful with assumptions like that !

Thanks for the solid advice re. FW HD's, I'll heed the warnings and keep an eye on MacFixit's site for news.
I've heard that third party memory sticks can be incompitable with Panther even though they worked well with Jaguar. Any thoughts/experience?

That sounds like a little FUD on Ars' part, considering that the whole article (yes I read it) is a criticism of Apple's quality control. (And note that the first paragraph of the article refers to the problem being with FireWire 800 drives.)
My "assumption" is based on reading up on the issue, not just at the Apple and Oxford Web sites (note that both specify FireWire 800 drives), but also at the individual vendors' Web sites, such as LaCie, that specifically state that FireWire 400 drives are not affected:
LaCie FireWire 400 products are not affected by this issue and require no special handling.
So how about we not panic people without sufficient cause.

Just to clear up any doubts, I saw on MacFixIt that they have retracted their speculation that FW400 drives are affected by the Panther bug. Technical reps from Oxford and LaCie confirmed that the problem is specific to FW800 drives with the Oxford 922 chipset.
If you want to check for yourself, see their Panther special report under "FireWire debacle."
