I've been thinking of upgrading from my 400mhz Sawtooth. The thing is, I absolutly want a dual. I've looked around Apple's website and there seems to be an interesting deal for the Dual 1.25 G4. The dual G5 is too high priced for my budget.
So I was wondering if anyone thinks that the middle model G5 will become dual in january? Should I buy the G4 right now since it is so cheap?
I use my computer mainly to run Maya and Photoshop
thanks allot

You're assuming that it's going to be January. I wouldn't rule it out, but it seems more likely that we'd see February (which is 6 months after G5s started shipping).
Apple tends to react to major trends in customers' buying habits. For example, the flat-panel iMac: they realized that people were either buying the 15" Combo or the 17" Superdrive models, so they cut out the other two 15" models from the lineup. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple offered a mid-range dual precisely in order to prevent everyone and their mother from ordering the system which is hardest to produce. A mid-range dual system would be just the ticket, so long as it isn't priced too closely to the top-end model.

Those are both pretty high powered apps and although I don't think they're really optimized to use the full benefits of the G5 (is Photoshop capable of 64 bit processing?) you'd still see improvements on a G5.
My general rule of thumb is if you don't absolutely need a computer wait a bit. Course, this may lead to you never picking up a new computer or kicking yourself in the head everytime a new model comes out...
I guess in short, if you can afford to wait until January, why not? A little more information won't hurt in this case.

I don't think we will see any new G5's in January. New iMac's though.

I think we will. Dual 2.4 or 2.5 GHz G5 announced in Jan. Maybe shipping a little later though. Dual 3.0 GHz G5 announced mid-summer.

also keep in mind that if new G5's are announced in Jan. you can get a good deal on a dual 2.0 then. Doesn't matter if the new ones are shipping yet I think the prices on the old ones change right away.

Oh man. I can't wait. By then, if ATI decides it's time for FireGL cards for the Mac.... *cream*

How much lower can the 2.0Ghz drop when the new G5s are announced?

I got my dual-G5+9800 yesterday. Previously I had a Sawtooth G4/450 and an iBook 600 (still have the iBook).
This machine is AMAZING. Astounding. Fast! I couldn't imagine needing more speed than this. It gets 167fps in Quake 3 on the timedemo 1t 1600x1200 with everything on, and 216fps at 1024x768 with everything on.
So far that's all I've done to benchmark. But Max Payne and THPS3 both play at their highest resolutions with every option on (4xFSAA too) so fast I could not ask for more.
Today I'm going to start playing with iDVD and iMovie. I still have 120GB of my 160GB free!
