I just installed Panther on my iMac DV 500 (after updating the firmware) Now when I boot nothing happens! I seem to be stuck @ the grey Apple logo. Putting my ear up the the machine reveals that my HD seems to not be spinning.

Has anyone had problems like this?

Is anyone aware of a solution?

upgraded client from OS 8.6 to Panther, used Panther CD to reformat HD and it booted fine, but when I went to install the OS, it stuck on the startup screen, never actually doing the install. From that point forward, I got no video, even if I try to boot from 9.2.2 CD. Seems like this model iMac has lots of issues with video, don't know if this is an OS X issue or an unrelated hardware issue, but I may be stuck paying to fix something I never really broke… sucks.

David Joyce: You did unknowingly break it unfortunately. Firmware updates (similar to bios updates on the windblows side) MUST be applied before upgrading the operating system. A quick search of these forums should reveal several last-resort fixes for the problem you have generated. There are no recognized video problems with the iMac DV series computers, although analogue video board failures were common among the original imacs revisions A-D.

hadocon: all i can say is try reinstalling by doing an archive install. Try doing the normal stuff like resetting the pram by holding down apple option p r for three startup chimes. Also try booting with the apple option o f keys held down. this will bring you to a command prompt at which you should then enter the following
reset-nvram
<hit return>
reset-all
<hit return>
the machine should now restart except for on some firmware versions in which you will need to then enter:
mac-boot
<hit return>
this will restore your firmware settings to their original configuration. If its something quirky left over from when you updated your firmware that should fix it. Please do let me know how it goes, and good luck.

Why doesn't apple put the firmware updates on the OS install cds? Seems to be a good way of preventing users from effing up their systems, eh?

they do. The proper firmwares are on the 9.2.1 CD and the OSX disks.
