Guys any idea why my Dad's internal modem keeps reporting a modem error when connecting to the internet?

This is on 10.2.3 or 10.2.6, internal modem on 700 Mhz FP iMac. When connecting to the internet usually it dials, then says "connecting" for 30-60 seconds then "disconnecting" and a dialog box pops up saing "modem error". Thing is that I've tried the same config on a 12"PB using same line and modem cable - no problems. I've completely reinstalled the OS so it's not a corrupt preference etc. Occasionally (say on the 5 attempt) it actually connects.

I've run the Apple Hardware Test and it reports "Device found" for the modem - is this the correct result if the modem is OK - or should it say "Passed"?

Any ideas greatfully recieved - is it time to send it back to Apple?

Cheers.
