I misread the thread title as:
Guitar Power Supply for my G4

... which sounded like a very interesting hardware hack.

Sorry, no special ideas on the power supply. Have you tried the standard answers to take the fans apart for cleaning and oiling? Check the video card too, vid card fans have a habit of getting noisy. The last two times my G4 got noisy, it turned out to be the video card fan instead of the PS. I pity the new G5 owners in about a year. Counting the video card, they are looking at 10 or more fans to dust up and get noisy.

ps - special reward for posting pics of how the guitar power supply goes into the G4 case.

i replaced the fan inside the PSU on my 2002 Quicksilver 733 (edu model). it made a world of difference. i replaced it w a panaflo brand fan. no problems whatsoever in 8 months of use. i also replaced the big 120 mm fan w/ a panaflo as well. this made a small difference. i decided to leave the cpu fan alone as i will likely upgrade the cpu w a gigadesigns unit which will come w/ a replacement fan. Opening up the PSU is a bit tricky and needless to say a bit scary but the effort is really worth it. I didnt have directions and couldnt relaly find anything on the web so i just unscrewed all the visible screws and then pried it apart just enough to get at the fan. Apple uses 2 pin connectors on all the fans including the PSU, so you will have to modify any 3 pin PC fan you purchase- either use the 2 pin from the "old" fan or connect via adapter to a 4 pin (the type that powers the hard drives and cd drive).
