I have an iMac G3 400MHz which started
emitting a constant loud whining noise
when it was running jaguar.

When I did a clean install of panther
the noise stopped for about a week but
has just started up again.

Why would this happen and is there a fix ?

That sounds like the well-known iMac hard drive whine. Probably the fresh installation meant that there was less disk activity for a while, but as files became fragmented over a period of time, the level of disk activity increased.
This is just my best guess, but it makes sense.
I am not aware of any "fix" except installing a new hard drive.

Just to make myself clearer, that whine is not a sign of any serious problem. It's only an annoyance.
