Just had a problem with our first Bondi blue (B) iMac - maybe someone can help.

Yesterday the Mum of the house was checking mail on outlook when the monitor strarted to flicker (and make rather odd "popping" sounds too) - then out of the blue (no pun intended) it just switched off. Pushing the power button (on both the unit and the keyb'd) did absolutely nothing. No sounds, no lights- nothing.

This morning I pushed the power button and the power light came on, the hard drive spun and then -boom- it just died again, and now positively refuses to switch on.

I've tried it in a different location and the same problem happens so it's not a location-specific electric problem - and yes I've tried changing power-plugs too.

Anybody got any ideas (other than go out and buy a new one..)?

Very, very much appreciated -

Neil

This exact same thing happened to my rev. b iMac. Fortunately your computer is still usable if you connect an external screen to it. It's rather cumbersome to have another screen sitting next to the iMac if you have little desk space, but it's better than nothing.
There are lots of threads in the forum about this specific problem, so you're not alone.

I simply borrowed a monitor that had the right connector from a friend and hooked it up. You just take of the plastic cover below/behind the computer, disconnect the monitor cable and connect a new one. The cost for a repair would probably be much more than buying a new monitor or buying a used rev. b and taking the motherboard from the old and putting it into that.

Ahhh, the dreaded iMac moniter death... Mine died about a year ago. Thankfully it's very easy to unhook the internal moniter and hook up a nice big external. Now my Rev. A has a Sony 17" hooked up to it. I must say, I like the bigger moniter over the built in one. Yes it takes up more space on my desk, but it's worth it.
Anyway, should you want to fix the built in moniter on your iMac, you need a new analog video board. Which costs about as much as a used G3 on eBay.

Just before I rush out to borrow another monitor...

It seems strange that it should be the monitor only. Whenever the power button is pushed *nothing* happens. Zip/zero/zilch - no lights, no sound nothing at all.

I'm no iMac expert but does that not sound more like a power supply failure of sort?

Or am I just being stupid?

Please unplug the iMac for a few minutes. Replug it and then try. You may get the chime with no video.

If you do, an external monitor will work. If you do not, it may work, may not.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

My iMac was acting the same way...

But if you want to be sure try vmarks suggestion or just open it up and disconnect the monitor-cable and see if it starts up. If it's just the monitor it will start up (I just checked on my old iMac that I've been keeping on the floor here for too long).

My revB iMac went down because the battery was used up. It sounds a lot like the situation described here: It just all of a sudden went dead, then I could start it up with some problems a couple of time, while going dead a couple of more times, before final total surrender to deadness.
When plugged in, and with powerkey pressed down, it makes the same usual startup noises, but fails to actually start up.
So check your battery!

On another note: Is it possible to connect say a new eMac, or any other computer, to my old iMac screen and screenspan?
