I'm expecting my new G5 any day now, and I'm wondering if this is possible:

When I sold my old G4, I unmounted my second hard drive and put it away. I intent to have all info on this drive transferred to the new G5.
Now, I read somewhere that a guy had connected an old ATA IDE drive to the ATA-port that the internal DVD-R writer in the G5 usually sits. (He unplugged the DVD-R temporarily and then plugged the old hard drive there). Then, I want to transfer all files to the original G5 drive, then put the DVD-R back.

Is this safe, in terms of data integrity and risk of corrupted files etc?

Any ideas?

You can get an IDE to SATA converter for about $30. I'd use that before I'd try plugging the HD into the SuperDrive connector. Apple officially says this is unsupported.

Actually the best route IMO is to buy a 3.5" firewire case (maybe $90) and put your IDE drive in that and then you'll have an external firewire HD. You can get your stuff off there and then use it for backups.

Connecting the hard drive to the ATA connector should work fine. Just set it to master.
