When calling the Swedish Apple Store, they swear that the new combo-drive 1ghz eMac can indeed boot in OS9. I even called and asked them twice, whereupon the Apple Store saleswoman went away to ask a man supposedly in charge of educational issues who confirmed it. He said that Apple didnīt provide an OS9 disk, but that if you had one, you could boot from it and create a bootable OS9 system (or something along those lines...)

However, when asking my local Apple reseller, he swore that the new revision combo-drive eMac couldnīt boot in OS9 and even went so far as to checking the e-mails he had recieved from Apple concerning the new models, where it specifically said that none of the new models would boot in OS9. I further spoke to another Apple reseller who also told me that they couldnīt boot into OS9. So whatīs up?

If anyone knows what is the real deal here, please let me know. Anyone having a postOctober 1ghz combo-drive eMac who are willing to try it out? For me? Please?

Oh and I need OS9 for audioapps *aware of fan-noise* while making the switch to OSX, so Classic is unusable for my needs.

None of the new machines can boot OS 9 on its own.

If it has airport extreme, it just won't.

The previous revisions of the eMac was Airport Extreme-ready, as are the current revisions. The last revision was bootable in OS9, so the bootability isnīt directly linked to Airport Extreme.

Anyone else got a clue on this bootability business?

My local Apple Centre (Glebe, Sydney Australia) swore blind that they 1Ghz eMac would boot OS9 but I suspect he just wanted to flog another machine. Apple info line said no, the online specs say no and the info in the box says no. Having just bought one I might try it and see what I say...

Thanks for trying it out, MrClicky! Is it the combo-drive or the super-drive model you tried it on?

Seems youīre experience of getting info on OS9-bootability was the reverse of mine: Apple support said yes, local AppleCenter said no. What gives, really?

Also found this little precise info: "For eMac (ATI Graphics) computers, startup in Mac OS 9 is available only with CD-ROM and some Combo drive configurations." from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86209

Pleasure. Mine's the current Combo model. I tried three different ways to get it to boot but it just win't recognise 9 as a bootable volume (firmware m'thinks). Would guess the article is referencing previous models (800Mhz etc).

Aah, the ethereal ways of Apple. Good to know they're as mysterious on my side of the World as they are on yours
