Hi, does anyone know of a way to sucessfuly instal ram into the bottom slot on a G4 Imac 15" once the two clips that hold the ram in place have broken off?

I can still get the ram in the slot, the problem is that the position/angle of the installed ram, is sticking out about 40 degrees from the position that it would be in if the clips held it down.

I could leave it like that and replace the base cover, pressing/forcing the ram into positon but wonder if this would/could damage the ram or case a short.

The clips being so fragile I am sure this must have happened before, but can't find a mention of it anywhere.

Thanks

Matt

how did they break off? i remember when i had my imac flat panel the ram was so tight in the slot i really didnt think the clips really did much...i guess i dont really understand how the ram stick could be 40 degrees off...when i installed the ram it was a perfect fit and the clips just sat snug over the ram? maybe there is a way you can keep them tight without the clips...but i have no idea how you could do that? maybe find out if forcing the ram will hurt it....if it won't then push it in there and it will probably be tight and will stay in place??? best of luck

Thanks for the reply.

I think I may not have described the problem correctly.

To best describe it lets say we have the flat panel iMac turned totally up side down so the bottom of the base, which is now on the top, is horizontal to the floor

To insert the Ram in the slot it has to be pushed in at an angle of about 40 degrees. the slot seems to be set at this angle to make insertion easier, other wise you would have to try and slide it along within the small channel.

Now I have pushed it in there and it is indeed very tight and there is now way it could slip out.

But the problem is that the clips seem to have two purposes: 1) to stop the ram slipping out, (which is not a problem as it is stuck fast in the slot) and; 2) to hold the ram chip horizontal in the channel once it has been pushed down from the 40 degree angle to the horizontal.

This then allows to base cover to be replaced without the ram pressing against it.

If you look carefully the clip has a little nodule on the side. This is dual purpose in that it; 1) stops the ram from slipping back out of the slot and; 2) as it is situated on the top of the clip, once the ram has been pushed to horizontal it locks over the ram holding it in place and stopping it from flicking up to the default 40 degrees.

The problem is holding it horizontal in the channel not preventing it from slipping out of the ram slot.

I could gently place the base in position over it and then press down slowly and this would force the ram down, but as mention earlier it would also mean that the ram would be in contact with the base plate and taht is what I am trying to avoid.

Thanks again.

Matt
