On my new dual-processor (2000) G5, when the computer has been off or asleep for more than about 6 hours and I wake it or start it up, the monitor (22" Cinema display) comes up with only vertical lines. After 5 to 10 minutes, the display changes -- still unreadable. Then if I restart the computer, it works properly. If it is asleep for only, say, 3 hours, there is no problem. I've reset the nvram and done everything else I can think of. Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes, I've had it for a couple of weeks now, and it's been a topic of discussion on the Apple support boards. Sometimes I get a black screen, sometimes a pale green screen, sometimes a mess of colors that vaguely resembles the desktop. Latest word is that the computer is not recognizing the monitor or something when awaking from deep sleep. There's no known fix yet. Hopefully it'll just be a software or firmware fix.

Me too.

After the computer has been sleeping for awhile, it will wake to an orange screen, a yellow screen, a frozen desktop, or a black screen.

Others have reported that they're actually able to restart their computers with blind key commands, but my computer is completely frozen. The keyboard won't respond. I have to cut the power by holding the power button down. How about you guys? Has this been your experience?

I also have the problem where if the computer has been off for awhile, when I start up the computer it invariably freezes a minute after it makes it to the desktop.

Sleep and start-up problems dissappear once the computer is up and running. It's only when the computer hasn't been running for a couple hours that these problems appear. Bizarre. I really hope there's a software or firmare fix for this...

There are a number of us experiencing video difficulties on bootup or wake-up from deep sleep. I posted this description of our problem a week ago. We are still waiting for our replacement video card, which has been back-ordered. I'm curious whether this will fix it.

My Cinema Display 20", the first time I started up the dual, reported a problem with backlight lamps. Then I shutdown the dual, disconnected the monitor cable, reconnected it and restarted... all lamps turned on.

Make sure the monitor cable is properly seated; this solved my problem and I hope this will solve yours.

Sam, Glad you had an easy fix.
I've tried everything, as I stated in my previous post in the link above. Unfortunately our problem seems to be more deep-seated.

This just started happening to me... display is botched. I have to try 1,2 or even 3 restarts to get it back in line.

My dual 2.0 worked fine for a few weeks after I bought it, then the monitor/sleep problem started. The last firmware update seemed to fix the problem and the machine worked fine again for a few weeks, but then the monitor/sleep problem started to happen again. This suggests to me that it's related to the passage of time but I have no idea if that's possible or what would cause it.

When new mine worked perfect.

After the firmware update it started up, then when black, but if I touched the mouse, it jumped back to life.

Now, it just wigs out.

It got gradually worse.

I posted about this above a couple months ago. Here's the update:

Complained to Apple incessantly for three weeks. After wrangling through the ranks of customer service, they finally sent me a new video card. I had a ATI 9600 and swapped for an identical card. This did nothing. Was having the same problems.

I eventually took the machine into an Apple Store. They called a couple days later and said they couldn't repeat the problem. I was really confused since they said they hadn't touched the machine or done any repairs. I was sceptical that the machine would have fixed itself and I suggested all the different ways they could recreate the issue. After going back and forth on the phone for a couple weeks, they still couldn't find any problems. I went in to pick up the machine and made them cold start it while I was there. Lo and behold, it started up without a hitch. It's been running great ever since (it's been about 1.5 months now).

They said they didn't touch the machine so I have no idea how it fixed itself. I suspect one of the techs updated the firmware without telling anyone else, but I'm not sure. Still scratching my head...

Mine is intermittent - it comes up black or green maybe every fourth time (after a full night's sleep), and a restart works every time. If it's still happening before the warranty runs out I'll take it in, but as of now I don't think they have a sure fix.

Let us know if it crops up again.

This is going to sound ridiculous... but go with me...

what is the temperature of the room that the g5 is in when the bad startup occurs?

Does this happen in the moring when things are cold?

Is there a heater in the room?

From what i can gather i think its a bad transitor or some dodad on the ati card...its still too cold on startup causing a freeze.

(do you have the ati card?)

Hey all,

The same thing happened to my Dual (2.0 G5) - there was a mess of vertical lines upon waking from sleep or the monitor was unresponsive. I took the computer in for repair and the built-in ATI video card was replaced. Since then, no problems...

best of luck,

- Moo!

Like many of you, I got this new G5 (2.2) dual 1.8 GHz 900 MHz with 1.25 GB RAM early November. ONE week after I bought it, each time I press the start button from an 8H00 rest, It freeze right at desktop password time. Up to 3 times. After 6 to 8 weeks of prepress graphic art running, some apps quitted as would’nt work and a font mess with FontBook, I decided to archive-install from 10.3.7 back to 10.3.5 suggested by the service bureau. Maybe a whipe & clean install from scratch then use it’s original Panther Disc. I experienced the lost of color profiles system prefs and other malfunctions through various apps. It could be the DIMM kind as told by service bureau rep. I’ve desabled the monitor/sleep set up. The waranty is over by now. I let it on for days before turning off. I visited Apple and SWP forums trying to understand by reading the most of everyone’s experiences.

That's funny, I totally missed this thread when it was new, and I have never heard of this issue before. It certainly does not happen to me, thankfully (DP 2.0 Rev. B).

Make sure your G5 is getting enough power. The machine draws lots of power when it's waking up and if it's plugged into an outlet with other things, and can't get enough juice when it's spinning everything up, it can cause wake from sleep issues.
