Hi, I have a G4 450 qs running 9.2.2 and the thing will NOT shut down. It froze recently while working, had to force restart it and now whenever i try to shut it down, it turns off and then starts right back up. I ran Norton Utilities on it, Disk First Aid and it all appears to be ok but still when i try to shut it down, it restarts again! I'm actually going home now for a 4 day weekend so I won't be able to try anything on it til Monday (when we'll have a huge amount of rush jobs coming in )

If anyone can please help me out here i'd appreciate it, I'll try to check here over the weekend if i have time. I might just reinstall the system once we get all the jobs finished up if nothing works but i'd like to avoid doing that. Thanks

zap the PRAM.

If that doesn't work, I would reload your OS.

If the PRAM zap doesn't do it, try moving these files to the desktop and restarting:

System Folder/Preferences/Energy Saver Preferences
System Folder/Preferences/Finder Preferences
System Folder/Preferences/Mac OS Preferences
System Folder/Preferences/System Preferences

You might do it one at a time, moving anything but the first one will cause a lot of system preferences to return to default. If none of them fix it, move the entire Preferences folder to the desktop and reboot. If that does fix it, you will need to do further troubleshooting to track down which preference file is the problem.

Hey thanks for the tips so far, I'll try these out as soon as I get in Monday morning. I was so frustrated at the time that I forgot all about zapping the PRAM. Hopefully all goes well......

Did you install any new Hubs, devices or PCI cards?

The only time I have seen this is with a 3rd part USB PCI card and a USB hub.

Yes it can go to sleep, i put it to sleep when i leave everyday and had it sleeping through the whole thanksgiving weekend. It really doesn't shut down long enough for me to pull the plug on it, maybe a good 1 second til it starts up again. My co-worker did pull the plug on it once to turn it off, then when he plugged it back in, it wouldn't start up! it was like it was dead, then about 15 minutes later we tried starting it up again and it did. We didn't add any new hardware or software for a while, like i said, it just crashed one day, now it won't shut down. Do you think reseting the cuda(?) button would do anything?

The only thing I can suggest is to reformat it and start from scratch.

My Sawtooth 450 does this whenever I have my HP Deskjet 1220C/PS plugged into it. (USB)

It drove me CRAZY the first time it happened, and I still don't know why it does it. But if you haven't tried it already, unplug everything from your computer and then try to shut down.

Good luck.

What monitor are you using? If it is the one with the parrot logo ( i forget the manufacturer), then that's your issue!

Basically there's only a Wacom tablet plugged into it, the computer's on a network so there's no printer directly plugged into it, I'll try to unplug the tablet and shutting down after we get our work done for now but as for the monitor, it's just a old apple 17" monitor.

what happens if you boot of a CD? does the same occur?

i'm fairly sure this is not a software/OS or HD problem.

does the button look out of place or damaged?

Is the option to auto restart after a power failure selected in your Energy prefs (i think) - if it is uncheck it.

by the sounds of everything else you've tried it points to a hardware m/board or power supply problem.

Alright, how embarrassing...All I did was unplug the tablet from the usb port then plugged it back in. Now it shuts down I can't believe how simple that was! I bet I didn't even have to reinstall the system for that to work.

Thanks to all who helped!!!
