Hi guys. Here's my deal: PowerMac G4 MDD with GeForce 4 Ti. I want a Radeon 9800/9700 but I need to drive 2 displays and the RETAIL 9800 only does 1 display. This means, I need an OEM 9800 or 9700. However, it is almost impossible to find an OEM 9700 and the OEM 9800 won't work in an MDD (I know, I just spent $413 on one and had to re-list it) My question is, does anyone know if I can use an old PCI Radeon 7000 or something to plug my (#2) 17" display into (through the DVI adapter) and buy a Radeon 9800 RETAIL to plug my (#1) 23" display into? Thanks for your help!

The retail Radeon 9800 Mac Edition will most certainly drive two displays, but it has only one DVI output (DVI-I). You can run two VGA (analog) displays or one VGA and one DVI display.

If you need to run two DVI-only (or ADC) displays off a non-Apple OEM card, then you will need a second video card, such as a PCI Radeon or Radeon 7000.

Why not a Radeon 9000? It has one ADC and one DVI-I.

Radeon 9000??? Sooooooo oooollllddddddd omg. Actually the 9800 will drive 2 displays but it only has DVI and VGA out - I have a DVI adapter I use with my GF4Ti right now but this means I would have to find a VGA-DVI adapter and tehn buy another apple DVI-ADC adapter or find a VGA-ADC adapter. I don't think this is going to happen. It seems the easiest (yet expensive) solution would be to buy a radeon 7000 PCI, use a DVI adapter to hook the 17" to it. Then, buy a retain 9800 and use a DVI adapter to hook the 23" to that.. Now we're getting pretty involved

Just buy a Radeon 7000 for a PCI slot. My G3 can run 3 displays with its Rage 128 and Radeon 7000.

You guys are missing the point... I want a Radeon 9700/9800. The problem is using dual ADC displays with it. Thanks though

There are some of us who have carefully avoided any ADC display so as to avoid these kinds of expensive problems.

Well hey I would never dream of exchanging my ADC displays! I'm just trying to find options. My 23" is the best thing I've ever bought for my G4!

Well that may be fun to say but it's obviously not true... Why don't you stop simply trying to add one more post to your list and actually say something meaningful?

What's a G4 MDD?

The current G5's drive 2 DVI monitors.

Since you were considering spending $400+ for a video card, did you consider selling your G4 and taking that money and the $400 for a G5?

Since I'm not sure what a G4 MDD is, I don't know if my suggestion is viable or not.

probably a very expensive option is to buy two 9800's... the advantage being that each display has it's own graphics processor instead of sharing one chip for both displays.

ah well, it's BS. the 9800 can do two displays without any problems...

I never said I was buying two 9800s, try reading the previous posts.

Two 9800's would be useless since I don't think there is a computer on Earth with more than one AGP slot.

I think unless you are able to find an OEM Apple/Radeon 9700, you wont be able to do what you want with a single card (given your requirement of Radeon 9700/9800 performance for at least the primary display).

I'd suggest a retail Radeon 9800 and a PCI Radeon Mac Edition (discontinued, but faster than the Radeon 7000 PCI).

If you must have a single-card (Radeon 9800) solution, I think you'd be stuck buying a $399 retail Radeon 9800 Pro and a VGA-to-ADC box from Gefen for $299.

23" Display from Apple = $1,999.99
MDD Powermac, both single and dual from Apple, both under $1,999.99

Research before you lash out young padawan...

ADC/DVI Adapter: ($29)

ADC/VGA Adapter ($28)

Radeon 7000 PCI ($90)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=25449

That's $60 vs $90. Where's the problem?

What are you doing that requires such heavy horsepower driving both moniters?

MDD = "Mirrored Drive Door"
It's Apple nomenclature for the last revision of the G4 case that supported two optical drives (behind a shiny "mirrored" drive door).

How will either of those adapters help? They're both ADC-TO-X and neither card even has ADC (and no, they do not work in both directions) And to answer the fellow bellow's question, I don't need two it's that I need a Radeon 9800 and to ultimately connect two ADC displays.
