Dual 2.0

"Wow!" Is all I can say.

Like night and day compared to the 1.6 Ghz I posted about here:

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...+placid+casual

(Although I still think the 1.6 G5 was faulty, but I guess that is still another story)

The 2 Gigger has done enough to make me order a dual 1.8 Ghz machine... made even sweeter with a nice £500 HE Edu discount!

My god, why would anyone buy Intel box if they have tried out a dual G5?! (and I have been very tempted recently...) This thing could bring us back market share like nothing else... if only they could get people to play with them for only a minute...

Blown away

Because most people buy as much 'raw power' as they can when they buy a computer. Some people don't even CONSIDER computers that cost more then $1200 (which is a darn shame).

Most people don't realize the cost of good computers hasn't gone down at all.. at least not much. For $2299 (i think it is?) you get one of the most powerful computers on the market.. bar none... but not only most powerful, most compatible, nicest to use, etc

[well of linux oses hehe]

 It'll catch up, personally I think the suckers will fly if you max the ram (8 2gb modules [STILL not easy to get at even a psychotic price]).

If people could surf the net for 10 minutes on a Mac instead of a PC that would do it... so refreshing having no pop-ups and windows opening everywhere. Much more pleasurable, even the p*rn sites behave themselves

One can surf just as easily without popups on a PC as with a Mac.

FozzieUK:

You can in fact achieve a similar effect on a Windows box... the problem is that probably 80% or so of users have no idea how to go about this. When I'm on my Windows box, I use Firebird for browsing and Thunderbird for mail. I'm behind a router and always keep the OS up to date. Effectively, I'm invisible to a lot of security threats, but years of experience and a willingness to look for alternatives (hence the Mac) are what let me run a relatively tight ship on even a Windows system.

The remaining 80% probably would be best-off with a Mac - especially the sorts of people who call up the support line I contribute to at work. It seems these days that as much as 1/4 to 1/3rd of the calls relate specifically to adware. There have been a few systems which were so badly infected that I just referred them to a PC tech, because they couldn't even keep a normal browser window visible for long enough to implement a fix!

Anyways, I'm veering off-topic. The essential bit is that the G5 is definitely a good showcase for the OS.

And then they will look at the sticker price and walk away. Dude, not everyone can get a £500 discount or can afford to plop down $2000+ for a computer.

Shoot, I'd like to have a dual G5. But I'm sure as hell not paying $2500+ for one (and if you add the cost of a monitor, forgetaboutit).

There's no doubt that pc's are cheaper. But just how much cheaper is usually overstated. If you were to price out a pc with similar performance to a Mac you would quickly realize the difference is only a few hunderd $$, and that is more than made up for IMHO by the Mac's unmatched DVD creation capabilities, ease of use, and overall elegance of Mac OS X. The Battlefront forum over at Ars Technica are full of multi-page threads arguing the pricing of Macs vs. pc's.

i wouldn't say im a switcher because i use pc's and mac's extensively at work. recently we use more and more macs.
Comparing the pricing is ludicrous because you can never compare properly like with like.
As far as im aware, presently mac's have the absolute fastest hardware sub 5000. They also have the hardware that has the most potential for the most significant performance increases from software based on todays G5's... ie. they aint tappin the surface yet. In our company we have already shoved our performance up 2.5 times by a recompile with a new compiler XLF. That was all we had to do. Recompile. Thats amazing really. Time is money and this is good for us.
Then there is the build quality. I have a dual opteron and dual xeon bothh running in a coolermaster s4000 case. Compared tothe mac it doesn't have anywhere near the same build quality. the aluminium sides on the mac and quality of the aluminium used is far far higher. for example the thickness ofthe aluminium used is at least twice as thick on the G5 enclosure compared to the two coolermaster S4000 enclosures.
Furthermore its extremely quiet. Much quieter than my dual opterons and dual xeons... (technically i shouldn't say mine.. because my boss will get pissed! ... yes boss you paid for them... they are yours ) Then you have an incredible OS that works phenominal out of the box.
If you are a developer you get the equiv of Visual Studio.Net thrown in with Panther. MS charge you huge amounts for this. OS X gives you access to thousands of existing tried and true UNIX apps out there. OS X comes with some phenominal quality apps like iLife. Personally i used think that apps that apple and MS bundle with OS's were just rubbish padding. OS X experience has changed that for me. iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iTunes are fantastic.
I also get access to a true hardware accelerated X platform for my unix apps if i want! (apple throw in hardware accelerated X with panther as well if you want it!)
Then there is the fact that the uptime on panther is phenominal. it has been up for the past two weeks or so not a bother. this is phenominal because experience with windows was 2 days max before a crash , system lock or some other need to shut down.
As you can tell i have been more than impressed. Worth every penny in my opinion. to each there own though.
