At work we just installed our brand new Dual 2Ghz G5 with 2Gb Ram, an ATI 9800 Pro and a nice 23" Cinema Display. We did a few After Effect v6.0 tests with our PC, a brand new IBM dual 3.06Ghz P4 with 2Gb Ram, an nVIDIA Quadro4 980 XGL and a 20" Sony LCD.
We opened te same projet. A few layers with a few effects (Typos, blurs, glows, transformations).
The results in render time:
G5 : 4m35
PC: 5m02

I'm impressed because the previous G4 were lagging so much compare to our PC. Now I want one for myself. Let's hope I have a big Christmas bonus.

thats great news glad your happy. by the way i assume you know that you can get extra perf by turning processor performance up to highest instead of automatic in the power saver options. I know i was absolutely gobsmaked with initial speed evaluations. imagine how surprised i was to see it was running at automatic and not at highest level!

What you are seeing there is raw performance. enjoy. Also you can look forward to huge increases in perf from the same hardware as developers take advantage of compilers that will be released that can autovectorise code for altivec. Other significant perf improvements you can expect again would prob be further tweaks to panther in service updates. Then prob the biggest perf update you could see will be when adobe and other software firms get their hands on a "compatible" compiler that can run the chip at its potential. Its hard to belive with todays perf but the G5 aint even breaken a sweat yet. Code that is compiled for it today contains very very early programmer optimizations if any at all. The compilers used to generate optimizations thus far have minimal optimizations for G5. Particularly those used commercially (GCC and codewarrior) have very early young optimizations in them for the G5, and to be honest don't really tap the surface. For example, neither can generate code that allows the advanced scheduler in the G5 to fill its extremely wide piple lines. nor do they generate code that is able to execute across the multiple complex instruction units in parallel. Ars over at arstechnica guessed that at launch "optimised" apps would only be running the chip at 50% its theoretical perf because a compatible compiler would have to be developed for the advanced architecture to run at its optimum. recently IBM announced a beta free download of aG5 compiler that is "compatible". I use the term compatible because i can't think of an appropriate word that would describe what im trying to get across. Check out the IBM results, nearly double or tripple the perf from a recompile in Jet 3d. Its still early early days at the moment. thats what has me so excited about the G5.
Glad you are happy!
On a separate note doesn't panther just rock.

Yes. I just installed it today on my 700mhz iBook. Although it doesn’t turn the machine into a speed monster, I can see and feel speed improvements, especially Safari. The use of the F9, F10 and F11 keys to navigate is pure genius.

I don't know why, but I forgot about it. Must have been the excitement. For the fun of it, I let our tecnician (a real PC head) set it up and he told me "Damn you! I'm starting to love Macs". I think he saw the light...
Also, no matter what some people might say, the G5 is very quiet. More quiet than IBM or HP dual workstations.
