My dadīs been talking to a local Apple rep. and heīs got the iMac 17" 1.25 in stock - and would like to sell it to him - naturally.

BUT, he says the 160GB, that comes as an option, is noticeably noisier than the stock 80GB. Is this true?

Or is the sales rep. just trying to make life as easy as possible for himself - by selling the stock 80GB version to my dad?

I have a 160GB drive in my Dual G5, and while you certainly notice the drive when itīs working hard - my dad will be working with video on a hobby basis - I wouldnīt make it a sales point.

Anyone?

Basically larger discs with the same platter capacity should be louder. Let's say one platter holds 80GB, then the 160GB version needs two of them inside. I've no idea if this is the case with the iMac (same HD brands, model, etc.) but I really don't think it's that much louder...

theoretically it could be that the 80G drive is a 7200rpm drive while the 160G drive is 5400rpm... then the 160G drive would produce a lot less noise! anway, apple tends to use different drives from different manufacturers mixed... my guess it's hard to say if you'd notice the difference in the end.

if you go with the 160G you know you don't need upgrading for a while, and doing the internal upgrade is not trivial to do. if you can miss the extra $ go for the larger drive.
