Overclocking a G5? Not quite working so well yet.

What! They have the money to risk killing a 1.8 G5 on overclocking it? And I am here working with my dual 800MHz, and I won't be able to replace it for a few years at the least. Oh well, at least they are doing it in the name of science; that just makes me feel sooo much better.

Anyway, it seems to me that it might be a bit rough overclocking a G5. I thought that it wanted a buss speed of 1/2 its clock speed. Wouldn't that mean that you would have to overclock that north bridge too?

I've been scouring the internet for anything on overclocking my now not-as-much-of-a-performance-beast of a machine, the Powermac G5 1.6.

It looks like early fears were warranted: Apple may have effectively shut down overclocking. However, with such certainty that the system controls the clock speed, it would appear that it would only be a matter of time before reliable overclocking software is made available.

I'll stick with 2GHz for now. I'll wait until faster machines have been out for a while before I get jealous again.

Heh, "windtunnel" - I love it! The fans are very sensitive, aren't they? I usually refer to my GHz TiBook as `the hairdryer'.

Wish there was a way of altering its activation threshold; just playing a track in iTunes is enough to start those fans whirring.
