This one has me stumped. I have been trying to resurrect an old lime green iMac. It only has 160MB of RAM and the processor is 266Mhz. My kids can still play Age of Empires II on this computer. I think that’s pretty amazing with only 160MB of RAM. However, when they attempt to play OS 9 (Classic) games like Bugdom or Nanosaur, the game plays impossibly slow and choppy or I get the following message:

“Sorry but you don’t seem to have enough VRAM installed on this 3D accelerator card. This version of Nanosaur requires 4 megs of VRAM.”

The card in this computer has 6 megs of VRAM.

I clean installed OS 9 onto this computer and the Classic games once again work fine so I am certain that there is nothing wrong with the accelerator card.

I then load Panther onto this computer and the Classic games once again don’t play. It doesn’t matter if Panther is loaded onto the same partition or a different partition, the Classic games will not play.

Prior to upgrading to Panther, I had Jaguar and OS9 on this computer and all of the games worked fine. I have not gone back and tried this combination-I think I’ll do that now after I send out this inquiry.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the Classic games work with Panther on this old iMac?

Thanks for the help,
Lou

That is amazing.

I have an iMac DV G3 400 with 320 MB Ram. To be frank I think any less RAM than 256 is going to make life slower and choppier. But I'll repost when I've upgraded to Panther to let you know if games stay status quo of if new issues creep in.

--------
iMac DV G3 400 / 320MB 10.1.x
Ti PB 1 Ghz SD / 1028 MB 10.2.8

While Panther has been a great improvement all over on my other machine (iMac DV G3 400) and good for some games, it's turned Total Annihilation into a dogggg

However, not sure if the cause is overhead devoted to Fast User Switching or not. Will try mesing with a few things to see if I can eke out an improvement.

I guess you win some and you lose some
