I have a friend with an iMac that shows a disk with a blinking question mark. And there's a cd stuck in the slot cd drive, that he needs to get out to be able to boot from a system cd. Isn't there a way to force eject the cd?

on the far right side of the slot is a small hole. With a paper clip push into that hole and you will feel it pushing a button, the cd should then pop out.

Or on startup hold down the mouse button and this will force the cd tray to eject.
Some of the newer macs don't have the paperclip hole.

This is with the machine powered up, right? I can never remember. All of the tray-load CD-ROM drives I've manually ejected had a purely mechanical manual release, but I think the iMacs need to be powered up.
Geez, I don't think I could say what I just typed!

if it's got the paperclip hole it does not matter if the Mac is powered or not.
The person posting says it's a slot loading iMac, so they'll have to use the mouse button down method.

No, they don't HAVE to use only that method. I have a slot-loading iMac and I use the paperclip method only, powered on or off always works. Says it right in the manual.
