Hello all,

I just installed an ATI Rage 128 w/16mb ram in my daughters' PowerMac 7600 (450mhz Sonnet Card). It booted up and it shows up in the system profiler. My question is do I need to do anything to disable the built-in display card? Or if I try to run a game, will it automatically use the better graphics card? Thanks in advance.

If you don't hook up a monitor to the built-in video, then the Mac will know not to use it.

If you do have monitor hooked up, you need to put the menu bar in the Displays control panel on the monitor you want games to show up on.

Hi again - congratulations on your new card! I assume it is the Rage 128 Orion?

If you are only using OS 9, you don't need to do anything aside from loading the standard drivers that come with the card. It will even let you run a dual-monitor setup, but you will want to specify the monitor attached to the Rage 128 Orion to make sure 3D games are hardware accelerated.

If you want to get it to work with XPostFacto and OS X, then that is much more tricky...

Okay, here's the poop. The connector on the new card is a 15pin, 3-row connector. The cable that connects to the computer is a 15 pin , 2-row connector. The connector on the back of the monitor is the same as the new card, do I need a new cable to utilize the new card? What are the connectors called so I don't order the wrong thing. Thanks.

Tom

I did some checking really quick, would it be a HD 15M to HD 15M cable?

My ATi Rage 128 Orion (bought new when it first came out years ago) included an adapter to convert the cable from an older Mac display (like my 1st generation 15-inch Studio Display) to a standard VGA connector (like on the Rage 128 and nearly all other modern analog cards). You can also find these adapters at CompUSA and other stores, often called "Macintosh to VGA video adapters".

You just need a moniter adaptor to use your old school apple moniter on a newer VGA port.
Here is an example of one off eBay...

Opps! On further inspection, you need the opposite of that eBay item. (it connects VGA moniters to old school macs, not the opposite!) My bad! But you get the idea now of what you should be looking for....
