Hello,
((I just bought a dual 867 G4 - it's my first Mac. I'm a changed man!! So superior to PC/Win (IMHO)... I should have switched years ago.))
My desk is one of those big wraparound things with a compartment for the CPU. Given that this is a 2 processor machine, SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT IT OVERHEATING IN THERE? The compartment has 3 3" diameter holes and I leave the door open, but the air still doesn't circulate that well.
Is there a way to check the temperature on this machine?
Thanks!

If you want that big 12cm fan running full bore all the time, go ahead and put it in there.

Welcome to the Mac, and I know how you feel about wishing you had switched years before you actually did.
Anyways, one way to judge the temperature of your processors themselves is by using an application such as AquaMon, which among many other things things will display the processor temperature on supported systems. I'm not sure if it supports your Dualie, so download and see.
Another application would be MenuMeters, which also displays a number of statistics regarding your system. Unlike AquaMon, MenuMeters resides in your tool bar up near the clock and not on the desktop.
If I may throw in my opinion: Why in the world would you want to hide that gorgeous machine inside a cabinet?!?!?! I had a Dual 867, and it was the most incredible looking piece of machinery to ever sit on my desk.
Show it off man...

PowerMacMan,
Thanks for the input. I have a lot on my desk including a laptop and 2 very large monitors. That's why I wanted it in the cabinet. I could put it under the desk, but it would kind of be in the way of my legs/feet. I do NOT however want to run the risk of overheating. I installed AquaMon, but the temp doesn't show up - must not be an option with this machine. If someone were to tell me that I'm taking a huge risk and they would never put this machine in an enclosed space - I would listen. If on the otherhand, it's just a matter aesthetics, I'll opt to put it out of site and out of ear shot (it's pretty loud...).
Thanks,
Wex

if the cabinentry is open to the back, preferable with a couple inches of vertical space between cabinent and nearest wall/obstacle for heat to rise away via convection once blown out the back, you should be ok.
If you feel your stressing the machine in too small a cabinent or space, perhaps you can rig an external fan to circulate cooler air into the space around the cabinent?
good luck

Wex --
Is it possible to put a small box fan on the 3.3" hole (to blow out the heated air from the cabinet)?

I don't know about you, but it's something I wouldn't try.. granted the 867's 7455's run MUCH colder then my quicksilver's 7450's (probably almost half as hot) .... I still wouldn't stick that thing in a cabinet.. look at the back of the machine.. all those holes are there for a reason
besides they're nice looking machines.. I'm sure you can find a cool place that it'll look good in and for people to admire hehe

You should be OK. Just leave it on for a couple of days and see if it's hot in the cabinet. If it's over about 95 degrees, add a little fan to the hole.
Apple is good about putting enough cooling in their machines... don't worry about it.
