My dearly beloved Blue Dalmation iMac's hard drive when to hard drive heaven now nearly a month ago. I even started off my Panther Installer CD, and then used Disk First Aid/Disk Utility/Whatever they call it now to try to check it, but the drive plain doesn't show up. However, it still whirrs quite audibly when the computer is turned on.

I could've just gotten an external FireWire drive and used that as my main boot drive to simplify my life, except that BOTH my FireWire ports are fried, thanks to an odd incident more than a year ago that also left my iPod is such a perplexing state of Death that even the local Apple Store (CambridgeSide, MA) geniuses were baffled.

I got a free replacement iPod that to this day works like a dream. Battery isn't what it used to be and the port cover is now gone, but "Hermione" still works like a dream and I love her dearly. Sadly, given that the iMac was out of warranty at this point, I never sent it in for repair, given that it would've required a nasty and expensive motherboard replacament.

===================================

Long story short:

I've located the service manual PDF online that explains how to replace the hard drive on the Blue Dalmation model. My question is as follows: what kind of drive can I replace it with?

ATA/66? How large can the iMac take internally? Do they even sell drives that I could put in there?

Any tips and hints appreciated.

You can stick just about any 3.5" ATA hard drive in that machine. Not sure about limitations on size, but when running OS X, I believe you can go at least up to 160 GB.
