I have a G5 1.8 with 1.5gb of memory. I have Panther build 7C107. My problem is for some unknown reason the system crawls to a snails pace with major lag between mouse clicks. It is doing this with no apps running. It will do this for 20-30 min. at a time and then just act normal. The computer is usually very fast normally, until it gets into this wierd slow mode. I cannot figure it out. I don't know if its a hardware or software problem. Any help would be great as it is very frustrating.

Please Help!

First, do you have any hacks or mods that could be causing the system issues? Are there any specific apps that hang or is it just a general system slowdown? Have you recently added any new hardware/installed or updated drivers?

One option is to go to applications/utilities/ and run terminal. When terminal opens, type:

top -u

and hit enter. It will list all the processes and apps that are currently running on the system..See if there is an app or a process that is consuming alot of processor cycles. This will help in determining what is going on.

If you have a third party mouse, then you may want to revert back to the Apple mouse to see if that is causing issues. Also, you may want to set up another user account and attempt to login under a diiferent profile to see if the issue follows you. If there is a corrupt driver or file in your profile, it's possible that it will not follow you to another...

Not sure if any of this helps, but let me know....

Have you tried unplugging all devices (usb, etc) and see if it still happens? I know if I boot up with my xerox printer attached to usb and turned on I get these odd hangs every 30 seconds. If I turn it on after startup everything is fine...

Sorry Joe, I had family come into town and had to entertain them. I did this morning disconnect the kensington wireless mouse that uses their mouseworks 3.0 software. I have been using the apple mouse that came with the G5. The system appears to be acting normal. I have no hacks or mods. I have not added any hardware. I have been using apple software update and are currently up to date per apple. When it gets real bad I have to shutdown and restart, but problem will still be there after restart. I will try the different login idea. It may be the mouse as it appears to be ok now with apple mouse, but I love a two button mouse with scroll wheel. Top -u shows no program zapping all system resources, but system is acting normal now. I will keep Top -u running and check when system goes into slow mode. Joe thanks for all your help as well as others who have responded. This forum is full of great people with great minds.

Thanks all and will reply again when I get the problem to happen again.

No prob, it may be the Kensington drivers, keep us posted and we'll assist in any way we can! If the Apple mouse eliminates all the issues, my guess is that it is a driver issue. Don't worry though, I've always used 3 button mice since I switched to the Mac platform, I just don't usually use the provided driver from the manufacturer...

Good luck!

If the mouse driver is the culprit, give USBOverdrive a try instead. You can get basic multi-button mouse functionality with no drivers at all, but USBOverdrive gies you some pretty nice capabilities.

I had same issues + general strangeness with my DP 2Ghz at work which turned out to be the power supply.
Pain in the ass to have my mac with all the files on it die on a monday morning with a CD-Rom on it I had to get ASAP
The worst part was the serial ATA which meant the drive could only work in a G5, nothing else in the office has serial ATA, so that sucked the big one. Mind you the Apple repair center did do a quick job.
This might not be your problem but it could happen. But if you have had your machine more then 2 months it's more likely to be something else.
Sorry for no real help with this post but I thought I would put it out there.

Good luck
