Will there ever be G5 accelerators from Powerlogix or Sonnet for older Macs, like the MDD or Quicksilver? Or is the G5 so different from the G4 that it's not technically possible to hook it up to the older system bus?

It might be possible, but you'd be losing some of the best features of the G5 like the faster bus, slots and memory which are almost what make the G5 a G5. I don't think they'll put an accelerator in production with the performance losses I think you'd get at the same cpu speed. Just wouldn't be worth the $ compared to just buying a G5.

I don't think there will ever be G5 accelerators for older G4 or G3 Macs. The G5 has a totally different bus (by totally, I mean they have absolutely _nothing_ in common) which makes it incompatible to the PowerMac G3 & G4 system architecture.

There might be faster G4 CPUs though.

Motorola has no more interest in continuing with the G4 line, it seems. So the current accelerators running at 1.42ghz are probably as fast as we'll ever see.

I think we'll definitely see faster G4's, except they'll be from IBM. IBM 750VX

More importantly...

Will we ever see Sonnet/Powerlogix etc release faster G5 cards for those of us who bought the single 1.8? Perhaps even a dual upgrade?

I live in hope of this happening...

Hi!

I read on a German NewsSite that according to AppleInsider powerlogix are working on a G5 upgrade, including a new mainboard...

Yeah. I was the informant that broke that news to AppleInsider.

So an upgrade that need both new CPU and motherboard, I assume that the memory has to be replaced as well....
What so brilliant with the G4 case that you want to put a G5 there?

As I recall GigaDesign think that any CPU upgrade that cost more than 50% of the price of a new computer is pointless. I agree

As far as I'm concerned, it's not that there's anything so wonderful about the G4 case that demands a G5 upgrade, it's my (hopeful) belief that a G5 upgrade kit would have to involve some sort of special cooling mod that would finally silence this f'ing machine of mine. (I even installed the Verax kit, which took my dual 1 Ghz MDD from an idling 747 to a small Learjet in terms of noise - but I'm still stuck with a Learjet.)

And then there's my own fiscal reality: I could theoretically explain a $400 upgrade to the wife, but I can't explain a big monetary loss I'd sustain by selling this old MDD on eBay, followed by an expensive dual 1.8 Ghz G5 purchase.
